Silver Dollar Nationals only five weeks away

The biggest race in Nebraska racing history is just five weeks away. The Second Annual Silver Dollar Nationals is coming to I-80 Speedway on July 19, 20 & 21, 2012. The 80 lap Super Late Model feature will pay $25,000 to win and $1,000 to start. It is possible that as many as 36 cars will start the feature event. The Super Late Model portion of the event will be co-sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Racing Series and the Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA).

Some of the biggest names in Dirt Late Model Racing will be in attendance including; 2011 Lucas Oil Champion and current point leader Jimmy Owens. “The Newport Nightmare” as Owens is called recently picked up his second straight Show-Me 100 title. Scott Bloomquist known as “Dark Sunshine” is a dirt late model legend having won just about every major dirt late model race in the country. Bloomquist is a two-time Lucas Oil Series Champion.

Don O’Neal, “the Real Deal” is the defending champion of the Silver Dollar Nationals and winner of four Crown Jewel events in 2011. Last year in addition to winning the SDN, O’Neal won the $100,000 to win Dream, the Knoxville Late Model Nationals and the Dirt Track World Championship. O’Neal has been on a roll this year winning eight Lucas Oil features this year.

Earl Pearson, Jr. has struggled somewhat in 2012 but the four-time former Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Champion is always a threat and could be a major factor in the SDN. “The Hurricane” is a former winner of the World 100 and the Dirt Track World Championship. “The Kentucky Colonel” Steve Francis is starting to make some noise again. The former World of Outlaws Late Model Champion won both the World 100 and the Dirt Track World Championship in 1999 and is back in a Barry Wright Chassis.

The MLRA will counter with drivers such as Omaha’s own John Anderson. Anderson is a two-time and defending MLRA Champion and is behind the wheel of the Greg Junghans Shop Quik #2. Mt. Vernon, Iowa’s Chad Simpson is a two-time champion of the Corn Belt Clash Series and frequent MLRA competitor. While currently not a regular MLRA competitor, Terry Phillips is the all-time MLRA feature winner with 101 victories and is always tough at I-80 Speedway.

Add the rest of the Lucas Oil & MLRA regulars and Midwest independents such as Brian Birkhofer, Jimmy Mars and others and the Silver Dollar Nationals should be one whale of a race.

In addition to the unique qualifying format which features no time trials and double qualifying races for each driver, this year the SDN tire rule will be Spec WRS-55 or Wissota WRS-55’s only.

If that isn’t enough the other part of the Silver Dollar Nationals will feature the best modifieds in the country. The United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) will be running complete shows both on Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21. The July 20 event will be a USMTS National event paying $4,000 to win and the Saturday event will be a Casey’s Cup Qualifier paying $2,000 to win.

Expected to be on hand are the best modified drivers in the country. Such drivers as; Kelly Shryock, Ryan Gustin, Jason Hughes, Johnny & Stormy Scott, Rodney Sanders, Jason Krohn and the rest of the USMTS crew.

Action will kick off on Thursday, July 19 with a complete racing program feature the SLMR touring series, B Mods and Hornets plus open practice for the Super Late Models and USMTS Modifieds. For more information on the Silver Dollar Nationals, visit www.i-80speedway.com or call (402)-342-3453.
