Is USMTS the most competitive dirt track series in the country right now?

Not just Modifieds -- that goes without saying -- but of all the dirt track series going on right now?

Last six USMTS races have been won by six different drivers: Chris Brown-Stormy Scott-Rodney Sanders-Joey Jenson-Ryan Gustin-Jason Hughes. Who wins TONIGHT in Decorah, Iowa? ...and perhaps the bigger question may be, Who pulls a Brad Waits-type upset at WMDTC II this year at the Creek on July 28th?

Others who have won in USMTS this year include Johnny Scott, Randy Timms, Ryan Ruter, Kelly Shryock, Mike Sorenson, Terry Phillips, Brandon Davis & Ron Ver Beek. And you know with guys like Jon Tesch, Jeremy Payne, Dereck Ramirez, Chase Junghans, Zack VanderBeek and many others still looking for that first win of the year, that list is sure to grow.

Gone are the days it appears, when a Shryock, a Hughes, or even a Gustin goes out and wins 80-90% of the races although I suppose that one of them or perhaps the southwest attack of the Scott twins and Sanders could go on that type of run. That sure seems unlikely at the moment with competition this strong.

From the USMTS National Championship Series, Casey's Cup Qualifiers and the King of America Modified Nationals (USMTS-sanctioned non-points race) combined, there's a four-way tie for most USMTS wins so far this season between Gustin, Hughes, Phillips and Sanders with 4 each. All of Sanders's wins have come in Casey's Cup Qualifiers although he is 2nd in the National Championship Series points just 57 points behind Gustin without a win. That points spot pays a healthy $20,000 at the end of the year and if he can overtake Gustin and win the deal, it's an even healthier $30,000 pay day. That duo is also tied atop the Casey's Cup standings but Sanders's 4 wins has him as the official leader. That can all change quickly with 'The Hunt for Casey's Cup' re-rack coming up next month.

Hughes, S. Scott, Shryock & J. Scott are all lurking in range of the NCS title too but with only your best 20 races counting in the NCS, there could be big moves in the standings later in the year as guys like Brown, Krohn, Phillips, VanderBeek and others could get on a hot streak as they catch up on races that count.

Stormy Scott and Johnny Scott each have 3 wins in 2012 with Stormy getting the biggest one in USMTS so far this year -- $15,000 at the King of America. Both have also changed teams since the season started. Shryock, Brown and Davis all have 2 wins each. With no one else having more than one win, that still leaves 9 different drivers with multiple wins in USMTS competition this year and 13 different winners from the 32 events ran so far.

With the 2nd annual $20,000-to-win USMTS sanctioned World Modified Dirt Track Championship starting up in just 25 days at Deer Creek Speedway where Brad Waits is your defending champion, your two USMTS Deer Creek winners so far in 2012 are Brandon Davis and Joey Jenson. That's about as wide open and as unpredictable as it gets.

(Late breaking Note: Hughes got his 5th win last night but only after Stormy broke while leading. They say the Scott twins were having a heck of a battle for the lead for several laps!)
