Linville best in Southern Regional Racing Series Red White and Boom 50 at Wartburg

By Chris Tilley

WARTBURG, TN (July 3, 2012)—As a HUGE Fireworks show lit up the sky at Wartburg Speedway, the racing was top to bottom as Dustin Linville of Bryantsville, KY went on to victory during the Southern Regional Racing Series-sanctioned Showdown event at Wartburg Speedway on Tuesday Night July 3rd while collecting $4,000. This was Linville’s second career SRRS victory as he claimed the Roger Breeding Memorial just over a year ago at Mountain Motor (KY) Speedway which was co-sanctioned with STARS MDRL.

Linville took the lead in lapped traffic from Dan Tipton to go on to score the victory while driving the 4B Motorsports, Graphic Impressions and Paul Benton Auto Body sponsored Bullock Racing Engines powered Swartz race car.

In post race interviews, Linville thanked his fans and supporters including Jackie Boggs who had helped him with this new race car and called from victory lane, as this was the fourth outing of the Swartz Race Car.

Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, TN had to settle for his third straight runner-up finish as he rallied from his sixth place starting spot after being penalized for not crossing the scales in the Dash event. Ogle was runner-up at Smoky Mountain, 411 and now Wartburg as he drove the Larry Garner owned, Blount Excavating, Explosive Specialists and Bearden Oil Company sponsored Custom powered Rocket chassis.

Rounding out the top five in the final run down was Riley Hickman of Chattanooga, TN who rallied to a third place finish after coming from 10th in the American Billet and Austin Trucking sponsored Vic Hill Racing Engines powered Barry Wright Race Car.

Fourth at Wartburg was Josh Putnam of Florence, AL who came from the ninth starting spot while driving the Hypro Race Fuels, Valley Metal and Fabrication and Miller’s Body Shop sponsored Burns Racing Engine powered Bob Pierce Race Car.

Third starter and defending Wartburg Fourth of July special event winner Ross White of Knoxville, TN finished fifth while driving the McCarty Electric, Alternative Care Sitting Service and Double H Race Fabrications sponsored Custom powered DWB Race Car.

Completing the top ten was 16th starter Jason Welshan who was sixth, Mike Weeks who challenged for multiple positions in the top five all night came home seventh, Skylar Marlar of Winfield, TN who was eighth while Georgia’s Aaron Ridley finished ninth and Indiana’s Jeremy Hines finished tenth.

Six yellow flags slowed the event as Clarence Belcher would bring out the first yellow on the 12th lap spinning in turn four. The lap 24 yellow would wave for Tommy Carlton who slowed by the exit off the speedway in turn two. Randy Todd came to a stop in turn three which prompted the third yellow flag of the night. One more lap was completed before the yellow would wave on lap 31 as Michael Asberry spun in turn four.

The very next lap the first of two red flags would wave as the first red flag was for six cars back in the pack that got crossed up on the front chute but everyone came away un-mangled and the race continued. Just three laps later on lap 35 as Anthony White got up into the wall in turn four it collected David Webb and several others blocking the front stretch for several minutes for fluids and debris. White’s car landed on the right front of David Webb’s Killer Chassis and mangled both cars pretty good. Both needed wrecker’s to take them back to the pit area. On the restart, slow moving pace setter Dustin Linville brought the field back down to the green but brake checking back in the pack sent cars tussling and Tommy Carlton couldn’t hold on and spun out coming off four. SRRS Officials warned Linville about keeping a steady pace on the restarts.

The final yellow of the caution filled event came on the 46th lap as Adam Beeler slowed on the back chute. During the yellow flag period, Ray Cook, who was now up to second position after coming from seventh had a right rear tire going flat as he bid for the lead several times from Linville. Cook’s tire got changed and he was back out to still capture a 13th place finish in the final rundown in the D & R Motorsports MasterSbilt.

Immediately following the victory lane awards, the Showdown Champion along with the top-five were presented their points fund monies as Josh Putnam of Florence, AL collected $2,000 as the SRRS-Showdown champion. He won the championship by just a mere two markers over Chattanooga, TN’s Riley Hickman.
