By Chris Tilley

MARYVILLE, TN (August 11, 2012)—Billy Ogle Jr. ended his run of 12 runner-up finishes with a win during the Southern Regional Racing Series-sanctioned Ole Smoky Moonshine Classic at the Smoky Mountain Speedway on Saturday Night August 12, 2012.

The Knoxville, TN driver led start to finish while driving the Blount Motorsports, Explosive Specialists, Bearden Oil Company, Cherokee Millwright & Mechanical and Massey Electric sponsored Custom powered Rocket Chassis to the $3,000 victory. Ogle became the 11th different winner of 15 events on the 2012 SRRS event schedule.

Ogle jumped to the lead with Skylar Marlar and Dale McDowell in tow. McDowell would go around Marlar who faded back a few spots early in the race. Vineyard would take second spot from McDowell on the 22nd lap and hold that spot following Ogle.

The lone caution came on lap 21 as Michael Chilton slowed on the inside of turn two, official had to push him on in further into the infield for safety concerns.

In preliminary action, 25 cars entered for the night’s action. Bo Shirley suffered engine woes causing him not to be able to start the 35-lapper. The Fast Qualifier was Billy Ogle Jr. with a 16:307 second lap. Heat races were scratched because of time constraints.

The Southern Regional Racing Series will be off until Friday Night October 19th when they roll back into Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, GA for a 40-lap $3,000 to win event.

In other action, the Limited Late Model feature event was claimed by Mike Weeks of Friendsville, TN who pulled double-duty racing in both Limiteds and Super Late Models while Josh Collins was second. 2011 Daytona 500 Winner Trevor Bayne made his Late Model racing debut racing with the local Limited division. Bayne had worked his way to seventh before slamming the turn one wall with just two laps to go on a restart and had to go to the pit on the hook moving him to 12th in the final rundown.
