If looking at a stock rearend how can you roughly figure what gear it has without removing the pig? We use to do this by counting the turns of yoke and axle and coming up with the rough number..cant remember the math of it..

Two ways, one gets you close, one gets you right on.

Turn one axle ONE revolution while counting how many times the pinion turns.
Axle 1 turn and pinion turns 6.5 turns = 6.50 gear or.......is it a 6.33??

Turn the axle TEN revolutions while counting number of pinion revolutions.
Axle 10 turns and pinion 63 turns = 6.33

This is true if it is a posi rear. If it is an open diff, you keep one wheel from turning and turn the other. You have to double the count on the revolutions. For an open diff, you would need to turn the axle 20 times to get the same result.
