(Kerens, W.V. 8-12-12) In a history making weekend, Elkins Raceway played host to a double header . On Friday night the rescheduled 2nd annual Jim Hitt Memorial was on tap. The Jenkins Ford Super Late Models were to fight it out for $5,000. After the 29 entrants time trialed, Jason Covert in his first ever visit to the 3/8 mile oval set fast time at 14.47. (Just a tick off the track record of 14.271 set by Chuck Harper at the Chuck Gear Memorial in 2005.) In heat action Tim Senic, Zach Dohm, Devin Friese and Shane Hitt snared wins. While Chris Garnes taking the consi and Covert getting the dash victory. Just as the feature was getting lined up in the chute, a unexpected rain storm dumped water on the track, and delayed the start for slightly over two hours.

As the green flag dropped Senic jumped top the lead with Covert, Dohm, Ricky Williams and Devin Friese in tow. The first yellow waved on lap three when Dohm slipped off the embankment in turn one. Senic, Covert, Williams, Friese and Jacob Hawkins now were the top five. Covert began to pressure Senic when on lap eight, Senic lost his brakes and Covert shot by for the front spot. Senic nursing the near non existent brakes began to drop in the line. The race remained green until lap 25 when Tim Hitt (driving a specially prepared Senic backup car) exploded a right rear tire. Covert was in complete control with Williams, Friese and the Hawkins brothers, Jared and Jacob behind him. The caution came out on laps 26 and 34, but it couldn’t slow Covert. A final stoppage came on lap 46 setting up a four circuit dash. Covert driving the Red Wing Shoes #43A said in victory lane that he ‘ had never seen this track before, but it will raise on the list of favorites’ Williams, Jared Hawkins, Friese, and Senic rounded out the top five.

The Budweiser crate Late Models took four tries to get their $1,000 to win 25 lapper under way. When the first circuit was counted, Corey Metheny, Derek Rogers, Kris Southern, Joey Jenkins and Jimmy McCloud were the top five. Rogers dogged Metheny go round after go round but Metheny held him off. Until lap 11 when Metheny broke loose in turn one letting Rogers slip by. Two later yellows on laps 13 and the restart of 13, slowed action slightly but the lightning quick track had many in awe as Rogers in the Amos Paving / Rick’s Collision #23 would drive on for his first career victory. Southern, Metheny, Shawn Jett from fourteenth climbed to finish fourth. Jenkins crossed in fifth.

A good field of Miller’s Used Cars Modifieds saw Deana Groves grab the point with Brent Trimble, Phil, Jeffries, Dylan Shafer and Michael Cromer right behind her. Trimble applied heavy pressure but could not fluster Groves. Darting through traffic, Trimble got caught as Cody Rogers looped his mount in turn three, leaving Trimble no where to go but into Rogers. That gave Groves breathing room as she picked up her second checkerboard in the Tri Valley Equipment / Melvin’s Tranmissions #GRS2 of the season. Jeffries, Trimble, Cromer and Chase Holcomb rounded out the top five.

Chad McLean jumped to the front at the outset of the Valley Supply Street Stocks looked poised to hold off Ronnie Tincher for his second checkers of the year. But on lap nine, McLean pushed in turns one and two, giving Tincher the room to get by. Tincher with Elkins Metal Recycling on the side of his #7 added his second checkers to the collection. Dusty Swecker, Randy Bohan and Shawn Davis completed the top five.

Trey Watson took his fourth Mini Wedge win as Logan Hitt had motor problems late in the race. Paige Bragg, Elliot Newlon, Levi Nolan and Jackson Jacobs were third through fifth.

Gregg Satterlee made his presence known as he climbed from ninth to fifth on lap 18. Wilmoth ws still in front when the yellow waved on lap 20 when Ron Delano went over the embankment in turn three. When the race resumed Wilmoth was still in command, while behind him, Stile and Hawkins battled door to door and Satterlee was dueling side by side with Covert. With the checkerboard flying, Wilmoth driving the Midcap Land and Timber / AFCO Shocks #B1 claimed the $7,500 check. Stile, Satterlee, Hawkins, and Covert completed the top five.

In the Budweiser crate Late Models, debuting his new car, Robbie Scott won heat one and started from the pole in the feature. The time limit would expire in the yellowfest, with Scott taking the checkers ahead of Kyle Thomas, Robert Cossell IV, Louie Krushansky and Shawn Jett (from twelfth). A very scarey moment happened on lap four when Tyler Stutler went over the embankment in turn three and rolled the car five times. Luckily Stutler was unhurt.

The Miller’s Used Cars Modifieds saw attrition the huge winner, but Phil Jeffries in the Dingus Lumber / Residential Creations #J4 got his first win of the season. Matthew Chenoweth, Robert Smith, Michael Cromer, and Chase Holcomb crossed behind.

It was the Elkins Metal Recycling sponsored #7’s second trip to victory lane. Byers, Brian Mitchell, Kevin Keene and Ryan Watson completed the top five.
