50th Running of “Allen Crowe Memorial” to highlight
Illinois State Fair Races

(Springfield ,IL) The sights and smells of the Illinois State Fair will once again be enhanced by the rumbling sounds of speed, as the Open Wheelers of USAC and the full bodied Stock Cars of the ARCA Racing Series invade Springfield’s famous one mile dirt oval.
On Saturday, August 18th, the USAC Silver Crown Cars will go wheel to wheel in the Tony Bettenhausen 100. The exciting day of racing will begin at 9am with Silver Crown practice. To add to the day’s excitement, Ken Schrader will be piloting his number 9 modified in the UMP Open Wheel Modified division, which will begin practice and qualifications at 11am. The UMP Modified feature will begin at 1pm. Brian Tyler won last year’s Silver Crown feature, which will begin at 2pm.
On Sunday, the 50th running of The Allen Crowe Memorial, named in honor of Springfield resident Allen Crowe, who lost his life in a Sprint Car crash, will feature the cars and stars of the ARCA racing series presented by Menards. The ARCA series itself turns 60 this season and much of the series’ rich history has played out on dirt tracks across America. ARCA president, Ron Drager stated, “The Illinois State Fair dirt venue is vitally important to the character and indentity of the ARCA series and to motorsports as a whole.” The capitol city event is one of two dirt venues. The other being the Labor day classic Southern Illinois 100 at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.
Past winners of the event include some of the greatest names in motorsports. Curtis Turner won the inaugural Allen Crowe 100 in 1963. With A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, Roger McClusky, Ken Schrader, and Springfield native Justin Allgaier picking up event victories, just to name a few. Last year’s race was won by Chad McCumbie. Rounding out the action for the fast paced weekend will be the always entertaining ,UMP Sportsman division, running for the Sportsman Nationals Championship title. Last year’s title winner was Dave Crawley Jr.
ARCA practice will begin at 9am with Sportsman and ARCA feature events to begin at 12:15 and 1pm, respectively. The Grandstand Ticket office will open at 8:30 for both day’s events. Advanced Adult tickets can be purchased at the Illinois State Fair Ticket office, 217-782-1979 or Track Enterprises, 217-764-3200 for only $20 for each race, or $25 the day of event. Children will be $10. Don’t miss this exciting two day event at the historic Springfield mile dirt track!
