If you're looking for some reading material...this book is a bit dated but if you're starting from scratch, it will be a big step in the right direction:
http://www.amazon.com/Dirt-Late-Model-Chassis-Technology/dp/0936834986/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345228663&sr=8-1&keywords=dirt+late+model+chassis+technology
Not sure where you're located but you can also get a lot of knowledge from a chassis setup class like RaceWise.

This board and some other forums are good places to learn if you know the source is reliable. I'll let you figure out who the reliable ones are and aren't but usually when someone points someone in the complete wrong direction on here, it generates a healthy debate and you still end up learning something from it.

Biggest difference from pavement to dirt is weight and weight transfer. On pavement, folks are always loading up the left side and trying to keep the weight as low as possible in the car. On dirt, 55% left side weight is on the high side and we usually mount our ballast at about cam shaft height to promote weight transfer.

Shock technology and tuning has become very important. I always encourage people to develop a good relationship with a shock specialist that knows the tracks in their area and has experience with the chassis brand that you're in. It also helps if they understand your driving style. Coming from pavement, you may end up being more the type that likes to keep the car a bit straighter on entry. Nothing wrong with that by the way but a setup that works for a throw and go driver won't work for you so just watch who you take advice from in the beginning until you have context to wrap around everything.

What year and make chassis do you have? Whatever it is, somebody on here can certainly provide you with a baseline setup and give you some ideas on what try as the track changes through the night. Actually that is probably the BIGGEST difference between pavement and dirt. Track "conditions" in pavement don't change all that much at all compared to dirt.
