Hawkins wins 3rd Armstrong, Champions crowned at Elkins.

(Kerens, W.V. 8-25-12) Mother Nature gave us a beautiful night for Season Championships at the Elkins Raceway. The Jenkins Ford Super Late Models had a lot to battle for Friday night. The Season Championship, R H Armstrong Classic / Topless 52 for $3,000. Plus a guaranteed starting spot in the Black Diamond next week at Tyler County Speedway. The very last car out, Jacob Hawkins, tripped the clock the quickest with a lap of 14.28 seconds. Mike Benedum, Tim Senic, and Jared Hawkins snared heat victories. Benedum doubled up with the Dash win. When the ground pounders roared to life, Jared out dragged Benedum to turn one for the lead. Shane Hitt, Senic and Chuck Harper filled the top five slots. Hawkins began to build a comfortable cushion while Hitt turned up the heat on Benedum. By the eleventh go round Hawkins had caught the tail of the field. While the laps clicked off, Hawkins darted through traffic using the middle groove. At the half way mark, Hawkins, Hitt, Benedum, Harper and Senic were still the top five. The only stoppage came on lap 28 when Jacob Hawkins slowed on the backchute. The remainder of the roofless race went green as Hawkins moved lower on the surface, would collect his third straight Armstrong Classic. With the Bobby Lake Motorsports / J C Distributing #37, J – Hawk would say in victory lane “I welcomed the caution (on lap 28) , I thought my tires were getting a little hot and that cooled them down enough.” Hitt, Benedum, Harper and Senic completed the top five. It would also give him a starting spot in the ‘ Black Diamond ‘ next Saturday at Tyler County Speedway. With his fifth place finish, Tim Senic driving the Roy’s RV Super Center / Mach Excavating Services #S2 added his second consecutive and third overall (2000,11,12) track Championship.

The Budweiser crate Late Models were also Topless and vying for a spot in the EDGE Racing League portion of the Black Diamond. Robert Cossell IV grabbed the heat checkers and jumped to the point at the outset. Derek Rogers, Brandon McGrady, Duane Moreland and Kyle Thomas quickly fell in behind Cossell. On the restart of lap eight second running Rogers pulled up lame on the front chute bunching everyone up behind him. The yellow waved again on laps nine, 17, and 21. But it could stop Cossell in the Uniontown Toyota / High Gear Speed Shop #50C from taking his second checkerboard of the season. McGrady, Thomas, Derek Doll (driving Bill Shaffer’s #55), and Shawn Jett rounded out the top five. With his solid third place finish, Kyle Thomas, driver of the W G Motorsports / Dodd’s Sporting Goods #32 collected the crown for the class.

Brent Trimble started on the inside of row two for the Millers Used Cars Modifieds and snagged the front spot at the beginning of the 22 lapper. Trimble continued to show the way until the restart of lap 10. Trimble was slow coming out of turn four as Phill Jeffries, Vic Vandergrift and Dylan Shafer zipped by. Two circuits later Trimble made the hard right hand turn into the pits out of the race. Piloting the Dingus Lumber / Residential Creations #J4, Jeffries would race on to make his second trip to victory lane on the year. Vandergrift, Shafer, Bill Vandevender, and Nick Wilson filled out the top five. Despite the early exit, the driver of the David Stanley Consultants / H & R Block #1B, Trimble secured the division Championship.

The Valley Supply Street Stocks had Jim Byers take early command and never relinquished it. After fending off pressure from Mike Duritsky for the first nine circuits, and then Shawn Davis for the remainder, the A & P Trucking / Sprouts Place #36 would cash his fourth first place check this year. The caution marred event saw the yellow flag wave nine times in the first 15 laps. Davis, Bob Miller, Ricky Vest, and Duritsky crossed second through fifth. Fortunately the Elkins Metal Recycling sponsored #7 of Ronnie Tincher, did not even have to show up to be awarded the Street Stock Championship, he had mechanical problems and finished eighteenth.

All season long it was a fight between two Mini Wedge Warriors for the point title. And when the dust settled, Trey Watson won the battle but Logan Hitt would win the war. Watson would receive his sixth first place bid, but it would be Hitt laying claim to the hardware. Watson would win the final race ahead of Jackson Jacobs, Hitt, Paige Bragg and Abby Watson.

Don’t forget Elkins will end the 2012 season with the Festival Race on September 15. Follow the website; www.elkinsraceway.net for payoffs and the latest information.
