23 YEARS LATER... GRANT ADCOX MEMORIAL SET FOR SATURDAY AT CLEVELAND SPEEDWAY

Cleveland, TN (09/12/12) – The Cleveland (TN) Speedway is gearing up for the 23rd edition of the GRANT ADCOX MEMORIAL race, this Saturday night, September 15th. The $3,500 to-WIN / 40 lap, Main Event will be sanctioned by the Southern All-Star series and is expected to draw a large contingent of regional dirt Super Late Model raceteams. The late Adcox, a native from Chattanooga, made it to the NASCAR big leagues before his untimely death at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on November 19th, 1989, during the 'Atlanta Journal 500' weekend. With sponsorship from Chattanooga’s corporate Krystals Restaurants, Adcox took a top 5 at the WINSTON 500 at the Talladega (AL) Super Speedway, which was his career best NASCAR finish. Now-a-days the ARCA sportsmanship award, (H.G. ADCOX AWARD) is named in Adcox's honor and is awarded annually by his father. Local track racing insider owner/promoter Ronnie Willkomm carries on the tradition of the event at the Cleveland racing facility which has hosted the memorial since 2004.

Scott Sexton of Pigeon Forge, TN took the checkers in 2004 at the Cleveland Speedway. Only one racer has repeated as winner since the venue has changed to Cleveland, TN. Dale McDowell took event wins in 2007/08, but it was Ray Cook whom took the checkers in 2009 after weather pushed the event back a month. in 2010 local racer Riley Hickman of Ooltewah, took home the top prize and most recently East Tennessee engine mogul Vic THE THRILL Hill took the checkers at last seasons event. Hill could be seeking to re-acquainted himself with the A-1 Towing Victory Lane at Cleveland and its annual visit by Grant's father Herb whom along with longtime family friend Jack Harper, join the victors. Other past winners include; Illinois racer Randy KING KONG Korte, and MURPHY MAFIA member from the North Carolina area THE X-MAN Shawn Chastain.

A full regular racing program in all divisions; A & B Hobby, Pony and FWD's are on the undercard along with the special LLM/Crate 30-lap feature race paying $1,200. Qualifying is the normal format for the S.A.S series that locks in a pre-determined number of fast qualifiers from their times. Already this season there have been three (3) different winners in S.A.S competiton at Cleveland's dirt track. Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN took the SHAMROCK in April, Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN claimed the TN MEMORIAL RACE in May and recently defending series champion Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, TN claimed JEAN JOHNSON MEMORIAL in August.
