BRASSTOWN, NC (September 27, 2012)—It’s less than a week away, the Ninth edition of the Ray Cook promoted Tarheel 50 at the Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, NC on Thursday Night October 4th. The event is presented by Hogsed Sports Ware located in Warne, NC.

The $3,500 to win / $400 to start event will feature a complete show for the Super Late Models including practice, Time Trials, Last Chance Races and the 53-lap main event. The Crate Late Models will race for $500 to win and $400 to win for the local Modified Street class.

It’s been a ‘Who’s Who’ of dirt Late Model racing that have been in attendance at the event or have won the event since the inception in 2004 at Tri-County Race Track and with the exception of 2009 when the event was held at Cleveland (TN) Speedway. No driver has ever won the event from the State of North Carolina, will that change this year? Also, no driver has ever been a repeat winner at this event. The regional stars will face off with the track’s hot-bed of weekly competitors including this year’s track champion Johnny Chastain along with Jamie Oliver and George Mashburn all from Murphy, NC; Danny Ledford from Warne, NC; David Payne of Murphy, NC; Shawn Chastain, Randy Nichols, Gabe Wilson, Bruce Taylor and former SAS Champion Shane Tankersley. Dillon Wood of Daytona Beach, FL will be looking to defend his Memorial Day Championship win as he took the $3,000 event win back on Monday May 28th which was the last big-paying Super Late Model event held at Tri-County this season. Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, GA also claimed an early season $2,000 payday during the April 6th special event.

In the Super Late Model event, added bonuses for the highest finishing Limited Late Models (LLM) have been added. The highest finishing LLM driver will receive a $200.00 bonus while the second highest finishing LLM driver will receive a $100.00 bonus and the third highest finishing LLM driver will receive a $50.00 bonus. This will guarantee the highest finishing LLM driver a minimum of $600.00 with feature start money and the bonus prize. A $100.00 entry fee for the Super Late Models will be charged that night.

On Thursday October 4th both grandstand and pit gates will open at 4:30 pm with the Driver’s Meeting slated for 7:00 pm and racing to begin at around 7:30 pm. Adult General Admission is $18.00 with children 11-16 admitted for $8.00 while children ten and under are admitted for Free. Adult Pit Passes are $30.00 with children 11-16 admitted for $15.00 while children under ten are admitted for Free. Hampton Inn of Murphy, NC will be giving a discount for guests wanting a room on October 4th with a discounted rate of $89.00 plus tax.

Previous Tarheel 50 winners include: Casey Roberts of Toccoa, GA in 2011; Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, GA in 2009 at Cleveland (TN) Speedway; Kayne Hickman of Soddy Daisy, TN in 2008; Dennis Franklin of Gaffney, SC in 2007; Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA in 2006; Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, GA in 2005 and Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR in 2004.

With lots to do in the area to open the Month of October, be sure to take in the following: The Annual Folk School Fall Festival on October 6/7 at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC where they have Handmade Crafts for sale, Craft-making demonstrations, Mountain Life Area, Kid’s Activities, Live Music and Dance on Two Stages all going on during the two-day celebration. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Super Late Models will also be in action at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA (October 6th) and Rome Speedway in Rome, GA (October 7th) for the annual Dixie Shootout weekend as the Nation’s best will compete for two big nights of racing action. Plenty goes on the first weekend in October in the Western Carolina/ North Georgia area in addition to the majestic Mountain views and the harvest leaves at their peak. The track would like to say a special thanks to Hogsed Sports Ware located just a few miles from the track in Warne, NC which will be having a HUGE tent sale going on the weekend of the event.
