Fall Classic Fast Facts and Tidbits

-The Fall Classic first appeared on the Ponderosa Speedway racing schedule back in 1990, when David and Anita Ferrell and Ed and Vicki Hasty were the promotional quartet in charge of the race program at “The Pond”. A young upstart driver from Ashland, KY by the name of Steve Francis would be the first driver to etch his name on the now long list of winners on the Ponderosa Speedway Fall Classic by winning the race over Eddie Carrier, Sr., Finn Watson, C.J. Rayburn, and Marty Horton. Francis is now married to Mr. and Mrs. Ferrell’s youngest daughter Amanda.

-The 1991 Fall Classic would see “Black” Jack Boggs of Grayson, KY take the Fall Classic checkered flag in an event that would see the future Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer outdistance Arkansas pilot Bill Frye, Steve Smith, Gary Green, and Paul Davis to the finish in the smallest Fall Classic field ever as only 14 drivers would take the green flag for the event.

-In 1992, the late Jack Boggs would become the first of only three repeat winners in Fall Classic history to date by claiming the Bob Allen Motor Mall 100 Fall Classic race. Paul “Big Daddy” Feistritzer would claim a runner-up finish in the Fall Classic, while Randy Boggs, former Jack Boggs wrench Randle Chupp, and Eddie Carrier, Sr. would round out the top five at the checkered flag.

-The 1993 Fall Classic would fall victim to Mother Nature after preliminary events were completed on Friday night, but rains washed out Saturday’s events, with Sunday’s raindate also falling to weather, thus, the event was cancelled.

-In 1994, Darrell Lanigan of Union, KY would put his name on the Fall Classic winners list by claiming the 5th Annual Fall Classic. Steve Barnett and Arkansas native Johnny Virden would finish second and third, while Ponderosa Speedway regulars Josh Tarter and Paul “Big Daddy” Feistritzer would round out the top five.

-For the 1995 Fall Classic, Ponderosa Speedway fan favorite Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN would take Ponderosa Speedway Fall Classic number six. Fellow Hoosier state driver Steve Barnett would take runner-up honors in the event for the second straight year, with Darrell Lanigan, Josh Tarter, and Steve Smith taking the third through fifth spots at the drop of the checkered flag.

-Legendary chassis builder Carl Jerome (C.J.) Rayburn of Whiteland, IN would continue a 1996 hot streak at Ponderosa Speedway by following up the Pete Abell Memorial victory with a checkered flag and the $7,000 payday for winning the 7th Annual Fall Classic. Rayburn’s win came at the track only 30 miles from where “Bud” grew up at in Yosemite, KY. Don O’Neal, Mike Jewell, Brian Asbury, and Sammy Sturgill would complete the top five.

-The 1997 8th Annual Fall Classic saw “The Real Deal” Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN claim an $8,000 payday by taking the checkered flag in this event, followed by now three-time Fall Classic runner-up Steve Barnett at the finish of the event. Jim Curry, former NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Jason Altiers, and 1995 winner Mike Jewell would complete the top five.

-Don O’Neal would become only the second driver to become a repeat Fall Classic by taking home a track record $9,000 winner’s purse by claiming victory in the 1998 9th Annual Fall Classic. The $9,000 payday is largest to win purse that has ever been paid in the rich and storied history of Ponderosa Speedway to date in the 38 year history of the track. Audie McWilliams, Jim Curry, Darrell Lanigan, and Josh Tarter would complete the top five behind race winner O’Neal.

-The 1999 Fall Classic would see the race go from its traditional two-day format to a one day format and have a sanctioning body in place for the race for the very first time. Darrell Lanigan would take the checkered flag in the Northern All Stars Late Model Racing Series sanctioned event and become the third two-time Fall Classic winner. 1997 and 1998 winner Don O’Neal would take second, with Kevin Claycomb rolling home with third place, while Eddie Carrier, Jr. and 1999 Pete Abell Memorial winner Scott James would round out the top five.

-The 21st Century would be ushered in at Ponderosa Speedway with James King now wearing the promoters cap at “The Pond” and the 2000 11th Annual Fall Classic would be one for the record books as numerous cautions, one car going out of the park, cold weather, bent race cars and frayed nerves would make for a two hour and five minute marathon that would see Joey Daniel of Liberty, KY claim the biggest win of his career to date as he took home $5,000 for his efforts. Eddie Carrier, Jr., Jim Curry, Jay Mobley, and Mike Jewell would make up the remainder of the top five at the drop of checkered flag on an extremely cold first Saturday of October of 2000.

-The 2001 12th Annual Fall Classic would see 1997 runner-up finisher Steve Barnett of Franklin, IN claim victory in the race. Trailing the “Franklin Flyer” at the finish of the race were Timmy Yeager, Steve Casebolt, Jr., Bobby Carrier, Jr., and Whitney McQueary.

-The Fall Classic was not held in 2002 as then promoter James King would close down the Ponderosa Speedway in mid-season of the 2002 racing campaign.

-Johnny Wheeler of Campbellsville, KY would lay claim to the 2003 Fall Classic-A Tribute to John Bradshaw. The event was a combination of the 13th Annual Fall Classic and a memorial race for the late John Bradshaw, who lost his life earlier in the season while as promoter of the track. Wheeler would win all but one of the major Late Model events at “The Pond” in 2003. The race would be under the eyes of then promoter Jerry Denson and be sanctioned by the STARS Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series. Mike Marlar, Timmy Yeager, Mike Jewell, and Jesse Lay would complete the top five for the race.

-Bobby Wolter, Jr. of Lexington, KY would win the 2004 Fall Classic and still stands as the biggest win to date for the likable driver better known as “Kid Rock”. Trailing Wolter, Jr. at the drop of the checkered flag in the event would be Steve Barnett, Mike Jewell, Dustin Neat, and Johnny Wheeler.

-Chris Combs of Isom, KY would claim the biggest win of his young racing career to date at that point as the second generation Eastern Kentucky hotshoe would win the 15th Annual Pepsi-sponsored Fall Classic. The rest of the top five at the drop of the final checkered flag would be 1995 winner Mike Jewell, 2003 winner Johnny Wheeler, Whitney McQueary, and Victor Lee.

-Aaron Hatton of Mount Sterling, KY would lay claim to the 16th Annual Fall Classic event after early race leaders Bobby Wolter, Jr. suffered a flat tire and Mike Marlar was caught up in an accident (that also involved Wolter, Jr.) and were unable to finish the race. Hatton held off a hard-charging Greg Johnson over the final few circuits, with Mike Jewell, Bobby Carrier, Jr., and Tim Tungate trailing that duo at the drop of the checkered flags.

-For 2007, an event was added to go along with the Fall Classic. The “Friday Night Rumble” was ran on
Friday night before the Fall Classic on Saturday evening. Jason Keltner of Campbellsville, KY took the lead from Eddie Carrier, Jr. with 4 laps remaining and drove to his first “big-race” win at “The Pond”. Don O'Neal would finish second, followed by Eddie Carrier, Jr., Aaron Hatton, and Brad Neat. On Saturday night, Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY would add his name to the record books as he would become a first time victor in the Fall Classic. Trailing Neat at the drop of the checkered flag on the 50 lap, $5,000 to win event were Jason Keltner, Brian Shirley, Victor Lee, and Chris Combs.

-In 2008, Bedford, IN native Greg Johnson would take the race lead from Dustin Neat on lap 28 and drive away to win the 18th Annual Ponderosa Speedway Fall Classic. Victor Lee would take runner-up honors in the race, with Dustin Neat turning in a third place performance after the leading the first 27 laps of the 50 lap main event. Eastern Kentucky natives Chris Combs and Eric Wells would complete the top five. Johnson’s victory made him the 14th different of the Fall Classic event.

-Red Buck Cigars would present the 19th Annual Fall Classic as a tribute/memorial race for the late Bill Pierce and Trenton Rayborn, as both had passed away in August of 2009. Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN would start 16th, but would take the lead with 11 laps remaining and hold off 2009 Friday Night Rumble winner Jordan Bland to score his first-ever Fall Classic win and become the 15th different winner of the event. Trailing Marlar and second place Bland and completing the top five were Dustin Linville, Eric Wells, and Dustin Neat.

-The 20th anniversary edition of the Fall Classic would see another first-time winner as Eric Wells of Hazard, KY would inherit the lead with six laps remaining when a tangle between leader Victor Lee and second place Mike Marlar would hand the lead over to “Easy-E” and he would proceed to become the 16th different winner of the race. Trailing Wells at the finish would be Dustin Neat, Greg Johnson, Justin Rattliff, and David Webb in an event that would be delayed two hours after time trials due to rain showers passing through the area.

-The 21st edition of the Fall Classic would see Aaron Hatton of Mount Sterling, KY become a two-time champion of the Fall Classic after previously winning the event back in 2006. A total of 32 Super Late Models were signed in for the event, sanctioned for the first time event by United Super Dirt Car Series. Hatton would motor to the checkered flag first ahead of Dustin Neat, Steve Smith, Victor Lee, and Jeff Watson.

-There have been a total of 155 different drivers make the previous 21 Fall Classic events. A total of three drivers made their first-ever Fall Classic in 2011 and those drivers included Stephen Breeding, Matt Gullion, and Jeremy Hines.

-Mike Jewell has made more Fall Classic events than any other driver, having made 15 starts in the event. Bobby Carrier, Jr., and Dustin Neat have made 12 starts, while Johnny Wheeler has made 11 starts in the race. Joey Daniel has made 10 Fall Classic races, while Bobby Wolter, Jr has made 9 Fall Classic starts.
