What is an Axle Dampener shock used for?

we used to call them "90-10's" ... they are used to dampen the downward thrust of the pinion (Rear end housing) when you get on the brakes .... depending on how you have the brakes attached to the housing of the rear end transmits the brake thrust to the chassis at different points.... Brake floaters use a rod from the floated bracket on the housing to the 4 bar bracket area... transmitting the braking energy to the chassis at that point.....you can have the brakes bolted to the Birdcage, transmitting the energy through the 4 link bars.... or you can be clamped directly to the housing...... or a combo of either combination.... this downward thrust is slowed down or Dampened by this shock... 90-10 means 9 on compression and 1 on rebound... so it comes out real easy and goes in real hard ( in simple terms)

now days.... most people run some sort of floater or bolted to the BC....esp on the LR... reducing some of the downward force... and they find running without an axle dampener frees the car up on entry....so most cars around this part of the country don't run them....
I have talked to people who run them only to help keep the rear end from tearing up and destroying parts in-case the pull bar breaks....
