201 Speedway March 30th. “201 Opens up 30th season of Dirt Track action”. Dohm Breaks Track Record.

1983 saw a large piece of property on Rt. 201 transformed into a 3/8th mile dirt track racing facility, turning a coal mining surface operation into what would become one of the most recognized Tracks in the tri state region, Bill McCloud, Dave Stambaugh and Donnie Meadows were some of the original owners who set the foundation of many seasons of racing in the hills of Eastern Ky. After several different owners, such as William Barker, Mike Vaughn, and most recently Chuckie May, made significant improvements to the 201 Speedway over the years, this past Sat, the next era of Racing fell under the ownership of Isom Ky’s Jarrod Breeding who purchased the track in late Sept of last year Following five racing events last season which again saw the dedication of Drivers and fans filling the historic track, and after many improvements over the winter, the Gates officially opened for the 30th season this past Sat. night.

Late Model qualifying had the #17 of Charleston West Va driver Zach Dohm erasing the Late Model track record of 12.99 set last November by Jackie Boggs as Dohm turned a lap of 12.937. Brandon Fouts was 2nd fast with a lap of 13.104, followed by a lap of 13.115 by the #18 of Michael Wright.

After scoring the heat race win, Dohm would earn the pole of the 25 lap opening night feature with the #13 of Jamie Ferguson sharing the front row with him. The start had Dohm claimed the inside line through one and two, and raced ahead of an early battle for 2nd between Fouts and an inside challenge through the corners by Brandon Fouts. By the 5th lap of the 25 lap feature, Dohm opened up a five car length advantage over Brandon Fouts who faced a challenge to the inside of the turns by Ferguson and the #18 of Michael Wright. Fouts finally cleared Ferguson and set his #81 up to the high side of the turns, while Dohm continued to hold the inside line. Fouts outer lane choice allowed the Kite Ky driver to narrow the advantage of Dohm, but following a caution setting up a Delaware re-start, Dohm changed his line to the higher lane through the turns and found a fast line off the fouth turn, again opened up his lead, holding on to post the first Late Model Feature win with his “Dohm Cycles”, “ T & R Logging”, “A & K Trucking” sponsored Rocket Chassis. Brandon Fouts held on for a solid runner up finish ahead of the #13, “JMC Motersports” entry of Jamie Ferguson.

Magoffin County Open Wheel Driver, Scott Lemaster made a pole winning qualifying circuit of 14.269 with the Hubert Spurlock/Clifford Jacobs owned fast Jack Racing engine powered #11.Jeremy Hayes turned the 2nd fastest open wheel lap of 14.596.

The front row of Sat. night’s Open Wheel feature would change before the completion of the first lap when Lemaster drove his machine a little too hard into the 3rd turn, backing it into the turn three and four wall, and also collecting the #35 of Hayes. Shon Flanary would move into the inside pole spot with the #00 of Boonescamp’s Billy Butcher to the outside. Flanary quickly set the pace for the feature as Butcher slipped back a couple positions when he had to chase his machine up the banking of one and two. The battle for second would be the closest race on the track with the #P20 of Mudcreek, UPS employee Ervin Vance and Kevin Hall exchanging the spot over the course of the race. As the money Flag waved it would be the owner of Fast Trucking, out of Churchill Tenn. Driver Shon Flanary with the feature win in his Custom Suspension sponsored Harris by Flanary Chassis. On the final lap, Ervin Vance would power his way to the runner up finish by only a couple of feet over the #43K of Kevin Hall of Wayland. Billy Butcher crossed the stripe 4th ahead of Campton’s Kevin Mayabb

Kevin Harkins and Jim Lemaster shared the front row of the Bomber feature, as the field took the green, Lemaster dropped the #3 to the inside of the second turn, by the 3rd lap, Charlie Mullet overtook Harkins for the second position, then set his #73 about an lane and a half higher in the turns in an effort to close in on Lemaster. Mullet used a strong run off the fourth turn, getting to within a hald a car length of Lemaster’s lead, yet the inside lane of Jim would carry the veteran driver through the first set of turns to hold the point. Chris Blanton would charge to the inside of Mullet to challenge for 2nd as the two raced cleanly only a foot or so apart for several laps, finally another solid run off the fourth corner would allow Mullet to clear Blanton and draw up to the door of the leader Lemaster. On the 6th lap, Charlie would get enough of a run off of four to clear Lemaster by less than a few feet and take over the lead. Lemaster charged back at the new leader, slightly quicker through three and four, getting to the back bumper of Mullet at the entrance of turn one, yet Charlie was a little quicker off the second turn and held Jim’s challenge back. With only a handful of laps to go, Charlie had to check up just a little in the middle of four, and Jim managed to keep from tagging his bumper, but had drawn close enough to make a bid to the inside of Charlie. With three to go, Mullett continued to lead, with Lemaster still challenging and in the final set of turns took advantage of a slight slip by Mullett, and as they crossed the finish it would be Cancer Survivor, Jim Lemaster, winning the Battle of the Bombers on opening night in the Greg Howard owned, “Dexter’s Grocery” of Bloomington, Dyer’s Barber Shop”, Risner’s Paving” “Salyersville and West Liberty Nappa Auto Parts Sponsored 1985 Monte Carlo. Charlie Mullett was second ahead of Brethitt County Driver Greg Hensley, Randall Stamper and Jayme Mahon.

Sat. night’s Stock Four Cylinder feature pitted two of the Mud creek Motersports members on the Pole of the feature with the #11 of Shane Yates to the inside and Nathan Martin to the outside. With the drop of the green they went side by side with Martin’s #3N to the outside of the fourth turn taking the lead, Shane would be slightly quicker at the entrance of turn three, but not enough to complete the pass on Martin. As the Green flag laps clicked off it would be Morehead State University Student from Mudcreek, taking the Stock Four Cylinder feature win in the “East Hills Heating & Cooling”, “Hall’s Auto & Muffler”, D’s Grocery”, “Twin Bridge Auto Parts”, “McKinney’s Septic Service” sponsored 1979 Mustang followed across the stripe by Logan Burke, Shane Yates, Michael Caudill and 13 year old 1st year driver, Chase Hunley of Magoffin County.

Wolf County High School Principal Greg Creech picked up the Modifiied Four Cylinder Feature win with his “Joe Mayabb Racing engine, Powered “Dixie Freeze”, Haddix Auction sponsored #66.
