BOYD SPEEDWAY RESULTS 3-5-2013
With spring time just around the corner Boyd Speedway hosted the Spring Triple Header on Friday night. The B-Hobby’s were first to bring the fans to their feet with two six lap heat races. Winners were #7 Daniel Johnston and #87 Corey Sanders. Next would see 23 Crate Late Models qualify for the top spot and an extra $100 for the fastest qualifier sponsored by Chattanooga Valley Auto Parts. Georgia’s Jeff Smith would top all drivers with a 15.137 lap around the 1/3 mile oval. Starting alongside of Smith would be the #10 of Chris Wilson with a lap of 15.174. The A-Hobby racers would line-up for their two heat races to determine the starting field for their 20 lap $500 to win feature. Soddy Daisy’s Brandon Stanfield would take the first alongside of fellows Soddy Daisy resident Bo Bice who would capture the second. The Steel Headed field of 32 would start the task of qualifying to determine their starting field. With the top 8 locking in and the remainder of the field determined by a pair of B-Mains the qualifying began. Taking the top spot would be Phoenix City, Alabama’s William Thomas with a time of 15.210 followed by Ray Cook, Todd Morrow, Kevin Gibson, Rick Hixson, Blake Armitage, Ethan Hunter and Lamar Scoggins. Thomas would take home a extra $100 from Chattanooga Valley Auto Parts fastest qualifier award.
As both the Crate Late Model and Steel Headed Late Model driver make final adjustment to their machines for their last chance racing B-Mains the B-Hobby “Heavy Weights” would battle first in their 15 lap feature. But the night would be filled with the same ‘ole results as the #45 of Dallas Brooks would show the field to the checkered flag. Following Brooks would be #87 Corey Sanders, #7 Daniel Johnston.

It was time for the two Crate Late Model B-Mains, Dalton’s Grayson York would take the first and Soddy Daisy’s Rick Hixson would capture the second. In the Steel Headed B-Mains Riley Hickman would best the first group followed by John Owenby and Jerry Coffman. In the second B-Main Ringgold’s Mike Tinker would best Frank Ingram and Dan Tipton. Now the field was set, drivers were sent to the pits for any final adjustments.

The A-Hobby feature was up next with a pair of Soddy Daisy second generation driver’s following in the father’s footsteps and would bring the field to the green flag. Bo Bice got his last minute instruction from his father Morris Bice while Brandon Stanfield would get his instruction from his dad Randy Stanfield. As things go both the elder racers shops were located across the street from one another years ago in Hixson. Bo Bice would take the early lead at the drop of the green followed by Stanfield and BJ Wilson. By lap 3 BJ Wilson had moved around Stanfield for the runner-up spot. Defending Division Champion Booger Brooks would start his way to the front from his 14th starting position. By lap 6 Brooks would work his way into the top 5, but the first caution on lap 14 would see the #148 of Brooks spin in turn 4. Bice had built a straightaway lead before the caution flew. But as the green flew once again Bice went right back to where he left off only this time previous week’s winner #2 Glen Seaton would be on the trail. Bice would hold off any challenges from the field and take his First Ever Career Feature Win and pocketing his $500 for his reward. Rounding out the top five were Seaton, Stanfield, Wilson and Matthew Morr.

The Crate Late Models were brought to the front stretch for their 30 lap $2000 to win feature sponsored by Jody Millard Pest Control. With Georgia’s Jeff Smith setting fast time, but more importantly trying to get the monkey off his back that has plagued him this year. Smith would jump to the early lead followed by Chris Wilson as two Super Late Model Legends “The Tarhill Tiger” Ray Cook and “The Chattanooga Flash” Ronnie Johnson began a fight for third and fourth. Cook would get around Wilson a set his sights on Smith for the lead as Wilson and Johnson battled for third. A Wilson and Johnson tangled in turn 2 which brought out the caution and track officials determined the caution was on Wilson. Wilson didn’t like the call and took his machine to the pits ending his night. As racing resumed Smith and Cook would battle for the lead, but on this night Smith would find himself “Monkey-Less” and would take his first victory of the new year followed by Ray Cook, Ronnie Johnson, Riley Hickman and track regular and Defending Division Champion Jason Welshan rounded out the top five.

The final event would bring the full field of 24 Steel Headed Late Model to the track for their 40 lap $3000 to win sponsored by Advanced Title Pawn. With Thomas and Cook bringing the field to the green for the first time, Thomas would capture the top spot early as Cook worked to get past. Cook would race past Thomas for the lead but was unable to pull away. Hixson doing the double would soon find himself in third behind Cook and Thomas. The feature was slowed several times for cautions, but in the end Cook would take the checkered flag. A post-race inspection would find Cook’s car illegal with un-approved mufflers. Thomas would take the $3000 followed by Hixson, Riley Hickman, Kevin Gibson and Todd Morrow.
