Boyd’s Speedway Results 04-12-2013.

Well as things go track officials at the 1/3 mile clay oval had their work cut out for them again this week as the late afternoon and evening thunderstorms on Thursday left the track with about 4 feet of water standing in the pits and on the track early Friday morning. But the Owners and Track Promoter Gar (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son would not let Mother Nature take this week’s victory. By race time the track was empty of water and the track was well prepared. First we needed to take care of hot laps and heats in each division before we got down to some serious racing.

In B-Hobby #45 Dallas Brooks and #38 Jeff Irvin would start on the front row of the feature after winning their respected heats. In Crate Late Model Soddy Daisy’s Jonathan Smith would finish in front on David Tindell and Danny Turner in Heat #1. Madisonville’s Jason Welshan would take the outside front row feature starting position after winning over Rocky Face’s Grayson York and Cleveland’s Tanner Works. In A-Hobby the feature lineup would have a pair of #44’s starting from the top spots as Michael Brooks and last week’s winner Beau Bice would each capture the checkered flag first. In Steel Head Late Model Chatsworth Georgia’s Johnny Cloer Jr. would best Lafayette’s Dewayne Powell and Heath Hindman in Heat #1. While in Heat #2 Soddy Daisy’s Rick Hixson would lead the field around followed by Riley Hickman and Jerry Coffman. In the last of the nights heats Daniel Burnette continued his winning ways as he bested Brad Cross and Steve Boyd.

The first feature event would bring the B-Hobby’s to the front stretch for what would turn out to be a caution laden 15 lap event. With #45 Dallas Brooks back to his winning ways the field would have their work cut out for them trying to un-seed him from the top position. At the drop of the green he set sail for turn one only to be slowed for the nights first caution on lap #1 as the #53 Chip Henry would lose a left rear tire ending his night before it even got started. Back under green Brooks would set sail once again only to see the yellow out once again on lap #4 as the cars of #8 Brandon Francis and #3 Garry Erwin would take their cars to the pits. During the caution the #44 of Floyd Brooks would also exit to the pits with a left rear flat. Cautions would fly again on lap’s #10,11and 12 before Dallas Brooks would finally see that familiar black and white checkered flag fly to take yet another victory. Following Brooks would be Ronnie Kerr, Jeff Irvin, Josh Kilgore (having his best finish of the year) and David Vickers.

It was Crate Late Model Feature time as 16 cars made their way to the track. Jonathan Smith and Defending Champion Jason Welshan would lead the field to the green. An early caution on lap #3 would end the night for the pole sitter Jonathan Smith and Danny Turner. Once back under green the Welshan train was back on track but close behind was the youngster from Rocky Face Georgia Grayson York that refused to let Welshan get out of his sights. A good battle was also brewing behind the two front runners as Cleveland’s Tanner Works making his first visit to the track in a while was battling regular racer David Tindell. After a lap 9 caution the field would continue the remainder of the race caution free as Welshan would take yet another Friday night feature event followed by York, Works, Lamar Scoggins and David Tindell.

The fans weren’t ready for the next two features as the racers brought the fans to their feet in both. First would bring the A-Hobby division to the front. With a pair of 44’s bringing the field to the green Beau Bice would take the early lead over Michael Brooks. A quick caution in turn 2 on lap 1 as Soddy Daisy’s Brandon Stanfield would spin while running 5th. Back under green Bice seemed to settle in trying to win for only the second time of his short career after last week’s victory. But what he didn’t know was that ole’ familiar #148 of Booger Brooks was now right behind him. A caution on lap 9 would see the lapped car of #69 Thomas Cagle cut down in front of the field colleting the #44 of Michael Brooks. Brooks was awarded his 3rd place position back for the restart. It was on this restart that Booger Brooks timed the start perfect and dove under Bice in turn 4 only to take the lead by the time they reached turn 1. Bice would continue to hound Brooks to regain the lead but Brooks held on to take his first victory of the year followed by Bice, Josh Walker, BJ Wilson, and John Clark III.

The night’s best feature event would see the Steel Headed Late Models put on a show for the standing fans. As Johnny Cloer Jr and Soddy Daisy’s Rick Hixson would bring the field to the green a quick battle brewed between the two. Hixson would take the early lead followed by Cloer Jr. and Jerry Coffman. Riley Hickman piloting that familiar #R1 was making his way to the front. As Hickman would motor around Coffman on the outside to take over the 3rd place he would quickly set his eyes on 2nd and the rear bumper of Johnny Cloer Jr. The two would battle even making contact several times, but Cloer Jr would hold the slim lead. But on lap #7 the contact wasn’t as slight as Cloer Jr. would make hard contact with the backstretch wall after contact with Hickman. Cloer Jr. would need the assistance of Denton Wrecker Service to take his heavily damaged car to the pits. Also taking his ride to the pits would be Jerry Coffman after losing his left front spring. The next 18 laps would see some of the best competitive racing from two seasoned veterans as Rick Hixson and Riley Hickman raced lap after lap door to door, but never making contact. Hixson was out front and was able to take the lane away from Hickman to get the run off the corner that he needed to pass. But the two continued to race as hard for the $1000 winning prize as they would if it were a $10000 prize. With the flagman showing the 2 laps remaining Hickman put it into the next gear and began to work Hixson hard on the bottom. As the white flag was waving the two passed at a dead heat. Hixson carried his #A1 deep into turn 1 as Hickman was diving to the bottom for what was the last time. As the two rounded turn 4 Hixson and Hickman “Who was going to win” as they passed under the checkered flag Hixson had what was described as a half of a Subway sandwich lead. Yes, Hixson held off Hickman by a shear 6 inches for his victory. The fans stood and applauded their performance. Following the two to the finish would be Dewayne Powell which by the way was having his own great battle with the #45 driven by Kevin Gibson (who battled from his 9th starting position) as they also fought lap after lap. Rounding out the top five was Mike Tinker.

The last of the feature’s would see that #3 of Daniel Burnette continue his winning ways as he held off Brad Cross and Tommy Hughes.

Next week the SRRS Super Late Models invade the 1/3 mile clay oval for the 40 lapper $3000 to win. The Crate Late Models, A-Hobby and B-Hobby divisions will also be in action. It will be “Double Points” in all the supporting classes. Come early, you want have to stay late and see what the talk is about at Boyd’s Speedway. Gates open at 4:30 with drivers meeting at 6:45.
