Bought used Bert. Claimed 7 races since rebuilt/new clutches. Drained transmission. Fluid smelled "good" but was pretty dark. Seemed thicker than ATF.

What type of ATF (Other than the actual Bert fluid) goes in these? Should I be concerned with color and consistency of what came out?

ask the seller what he was using. If you change types of fluids it's likely the clutches will burn up in a night or two.

Been trying that for a few days actually..No luck thus far. Short of rebuilding the darn thing, what are my options?

He may have ran the oil too long, it needs to be changed every race due to no filter in the tranny. It should have a metallic look to it but shouldnt be burnt looking. I have heard of guys using rear end oil, SAE 30W oil, and DEX III tranny fluid. I have been using Type F fluid.

Bert recommends Type F, or their own brand of fluid. I think it is called Bert Blue.
If it was thick, I bet it was motor oil.
I would take it apart, clean it all out, clean the clutches, and soak them overnight in Ford ATF.
