Jared Hawkins won, followed by Chuck Harper, and I think Billy Holbert was third.

Amazing what a little help from Mother Nature in the form of a shower about 6:30-7:00 will do for a track. No crawling around the bottom. It was hammer down.

[Elkins Raceway]

(Kerens, W.V. 5-19-13) Mother Nature tried but failed to stop racing at Elkins on Friday night. A light shower began shortly after gates opened, although pushing track prep and the start time back, she couldn’t halt Roy’s RV Super Center’s Education Appreciation Night. After showing valid school ID’s area Teacher’s were allowed in free for the night.

The Good Samaritan of Barbour County Mod Lites had their first of eight specials this year with the Ryan’s Repair $500 to win. After Jeff Fornash and Mitch Ward won the prelims, it took three tries to get under way. Fornash would hold off Ward the entire distance for the checkers and big check. Matt Ward finished third. Grafton drivers Randy Kerns and Zak Kimbrew were fourth and fifth.

During hot laps in the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models, it quickly became apparent that the Hawkins boys were the class of the field on that night. Jacob scored the first heat in a easy drive, while Jared held off Billy Holbert to take the second. Jared jumped to the point at the green with Jacob on his tail. Holbert, Chuck Harper and Tim Senic followed. The brothers set a blistering pace encountering the backmarkers by lap nine. On lap 11 Jacob slapped the front straight wall, as the green stayed out Jacob took his car to the pits.

While lapped traffic slowed Jared down that let Holbert quickly reel him in. By lap 17 Holbert applied heavy pressure. The yellow waved on lap 21 when Paul Wilmoth Jr. slowed, leaving a liquid trail behind him. Hawkins, Holbert, Harper, Senic and Butch McGill were now the top five. Holbert continued to dog Hawkins until a flat tire on lap 23 ended his evening. Hawkins driving the J C Distributing / Melvin’s Transmissions #37 collected his first checkerboard of the year. Harper, Senic, McGill and Skip Hare completed the top five.

The Budweiser FASTRAK Late Models took only two tries to count a circuit this week. At the drop of the green, Michael Lake muscled by Greg Hicks in turn one to take the front spot. Derek Rogers, Kris Southern and Matt Lopez fell into line. On lap eight Lake got loose in turn two from a flat tire and began to drop in the order, then slowed on the backchute. Dusty Swecker had nowhere to go and slammed into the back of Lake, ending both of their evenings. With Hicks now in command, on the restart, Chad Green, Lopez and Corey Metheny all tried to occupy the same piece of track, resulting in sending Metheny airbourne into the ute tires on the back stretch. Luckily all drivers were ok, but not their machines. Hicks piloting the Corridor H Tire / Triple E Service #1H was able to turn back Rogers for the victory. Southern, Mike Thorne and Tracie Sampson completed the top five. Norm Weaver was the Leggett Refrigeration Hard Charger.

After leading most of the Fast “N Friendly Pharmacy Modified feature last, only to lose the lead in the closing laps, Phil Jeffries seemed to be on a mission this week. Robert Smith grabbed the lead at the outset but an eighth starting Brent Trimble came roaring through the pack to second on the opening circuit. On lap two Smith drifted a little too high in turn two allowing Trimble to pounce taking the spot. Jeffries began an all out assault trying every and any possible lines to gain an advantage. Jeffries breathed down Trimble neck until just two go rounds to go. Jeffries drove into turn two a little too high and slipped off the banking allowing Trimble to drive away for the win. Trimble scored his second straight checkerboard in the BB & T Autocrushers / Stutler Racing Engines #1B. Jeffries held onto second. Smith, Nick Wilson and Byson Sanders were the third through fifth.

At the start of the Miller’s Used Cars Street Stock finale, pole setter J P Tallman broke loose in turn two and spun into the infield. Outside pole setter Scott Bittinger would inherit the lead and would not be seriously challenged. The legendary Automotive Machine / Gold Digger Racing #29 newest driver claimed his first career win at Elkins. James Nelson, Samantha Rogers, Rick Knicley and Kenny Rowback followed across the stripe.

Absolutely the best race of the night, year and may go down as one for the archives. The Darren’s Pizza Shack Mini Wedges began normally enough but quickly became an ‘edge of your seat, holler for your favorite!’ Paige Bragg, Kaitlyn Frazier, and Logan Hitt each took multiple times leading the exciter. The trio raged a war, battled, and all the other cliches combined. Abby Dalton would later join and make her presence known. When it was all said and done. Frazier took the checkers, followed by Hitt, Watson, Skylar Moats and Austin Simmons.

This week will feature the Valley Supply $500 to win for the Miller’s Used Cars Street Stocks.
