Wal201 Speedway May 18th. Dustin “Rooster” Linville scores Walter “Peg” Combs Memorial $3000 Late Model Checkers at 201. “Nathan Martin wins $900 Four Cylinder feature.

Despite the threat of rain over most of the eastern Ky area and while other tracks in the area fell victim to the weather the 201 Speedway in Sitka opened the gates on the 2nd annual Walter “Peg”Combs Memorial honoring the memory of someone who had such an impact on the sport and was recognized by many as one of the most influential people associated with Dirt track racing in eastern ky.

Preliminary Late Model qualifying for the $3000.00 Late Model feature put the #24H, Anthony Johnson race engine powered, Red’s Boot Barn Rocket chassis of Salyersville’s Michael Paul Howard as the quickest to turn a lap around the 30 year old track posting a best lap of 14.251.

Late Model heat races were won by Howard, Bryantsville Ky’s Dustin Linville, and Jerimia Ky’s Raymond Nichols setting the starting grid for the 40 lap Late Model feature.
Mother nature would have her say just before the start of the 40 lap event with just enough of a small shower to dampen the red clay racing surface, however in the end, dirt track fans would prevail as the entire field of Late model drivers went on the track, managing to get the surface in the best condition of the night by turning several pace laps, packing the clay for what many at the end of the race called the best Late model race seen at the track in many years. The front row of the start of the “Walter Combs memorial had Howard’s #24H on the inside pole, flanked to the outside by the #D8 of Dustin Linville. With the drop of the green, it was Howard claiming the bottom lane of the track as they headed for the first set of turns. As they raced the second circuit, behind Howard and Linville, it was the #18 of Brandon Kinzer making a bid to the inside of Jackie Boggs yet Boggs turned back Brandon’s challenge and went after Lenville, racing him to the outside of turn two completing the pass for the second position on the 3rd lap then cutting a line to the inside of Howard’s lead in the center of turn four as the two passed the start finish line completely side by side for the lead. This battle for the point continued over the next several circuits with Howard leaving a lane to the inside for Boggs and neither willing to fall in line for second. Boggs was faster at the entrance and through the middle of three and four, but it would be a strong run off the tall banking of turn four by Howard that would erase the advantage Boggs made in the first part of the third and fourth turn. It wasn’t till the sixth lap that Boggs fell in line a couple of car lengths behind Michael Paul who continued to run the outside line through the turns, only a foot off of the outside wall in turn four. On lap 10,with the leaders dealing with lap traffic, Lenville shot to the outside of Boggs in turn two then used a solid run down the backstretch reeling in the leader then making a slide move to the inside of Howard in turn four taking over the lead, but Michael Paul charged back at Dustin keeping within striking distance. Lap 14 had the race for the lead really heat up with a three wide challenge for the point, Boggs to the outside, Lenville and Howard stacked up three lanes wide through one and two, with Chris Combs all the way to the bottom making it four wide for the lead on the next lap off of turn four. The front four continued to stay wheel to wheel the next couple of laps, with Boggs holding the point turning back just slightly one of the most contested battle’s for the lead seen at 201 in years. With Boggs running the outside lines of the turns, Lenville made his charge to the inside of the leader, staying all over the rear decklid of Boggs. In turn two on lap 17 Lenville dove his #D8 to the inside of Boggs and the two would race side by side all the way through three and four and continued by the flag stand, neither willing to fall into the other’s tracks. Lennville would get into turn one quicker than Boggs, but again Boggs outside lane proved faster for the Grayson racer, keeping Dustin in second. Caution on lap 25 ended the issue with lap traffic and had Boggs qucker on the throttle than Lenville for the restart and Chris Combs taking advantage with a strong move to the inside of Lenville through one and two muscling his way to the second position. Lenville and Combs continued to battle for the second spot running side by side and allowing Boggs a least bit of a cushion until lap 28 after Combs and Lenville raced wheel to wheel for three or four laps, Dustin stayed on the gas a little longer off of turn two and outran Combs to the third turn to again re claim the secnd spot. By lap32 Lenville had ran down the leader, Boggs again getting ahead of him with a good run through the center of three and four but Boggs stayed committed to the high side of the turns and took a strong run off the banking of turn four to retain the lead by only a foot. With six to go in turn two Lenville took a hard run into the corner and was able to pull up in front of Boggs taking over the lead with a handful of laps to go. Lenville now raced the higher lane through the corners, with Boggs taking his #4B to the inside lane. As the laps neared the $3000 Walter “Peg” Combs Memorial Checkers it would be 22 year old Finish Carpenter, Dustin”Rooster” Lenville of Bryantsville Ky scoring the Late Model Feature win in the Foster Cook, “Cookie Monster” race engine powered, “Johnny Maco’s Electric”, “Graphic Impressions”, “Paul Benton Auto Body”, Linville Finish Carpentry 2012 Swartz chassis. After leading with six to go, Grayson’s Jackie Boggs finished as the runner up ahead of Chris Combs, early race leader Michael Paul Howard, and Prestonsburg’s Paul Harris. 201 would like to thank the family of Walter Combs for allowing us the opportunity to honor the memory of Walter and we look forward to next year’s event.

Sat. night’s other Main event, showcased Four cylinders in what was schelduled to be a $800.00 to win feature, yet with an extra $100.00 put up by Danny Joe Daniel the payoff was a little sweeter. Logan Burke and Nathan Martin went to the front of the feature early, with Burke running the inside lane and Martin challenging to the outside. First year driver 13 year old chase Hunley kept all over the leaders during the early going of the race. Midway through the feature after racing only inches apart from each other, Burke and Martin made slight contact in the middle of turn two sending the #3N of Martin around, and after officials charged the caution to Burke, Logan restarted from the rear of the field. When they raced to the $900 Four Cylinder checkers, 20 year old Pharmacy student, Nathan Martin of the Mudcreek Motersports team took the”Hall’s Auto & Muffler” “East Hills Heating & Cooling”, “D’s Grocery”, “Twin Bridge Auto Parts”, “East Ky Auto World sponsored 1988 Mustang to the winner’s circle, After restarting shotgun on the field, Logan Burke of Drift raced back to a runner up finish after battling with the #3 of Salyersville’s Chase Huney who turned in a solid 3rd place finish in only his 1st season of stock car action following several years in the Go Cart world.
