Southern All Star Racing Series Scott Sexton Memorial at Volunteer Speedway June 1

Huntsville, AL- May 23, 2013- The Southern All Star Racing Series is set to begin the month of June with what is one of the most prestigious events on the 2013 SAS tour calendar as the road warriors of the Southern All Star Racing Series visit Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, TN for the 1st Annual Scott Sexton Memorial, which will be 52 laps in length and pay $5,200 to win at the Joe and Phyllis Loven promoted 4/10 mile high-banked clay oval.

The Southern All Star Racing Series event at Volunteer Speedway on Saturday June 1 will feature a complete program of practice, A-B Group Time Trials, PPM Racing Products Last Chance Showdowns, and will conclude with the 52 lap, $5,200 to win 1st Annual Scott Sexton Memorial Southern All Star Racing Series A-Main. Joining the Southern All Star Racing Series in action at Volunteer Speedway on Saturday June 1 will be the track’s Modified Hobby and Mini Stock divisions.

Of note to all Super Late Model competitors, Volunteer Speedway’s transponder system will be used for this event. If a driver has his own transponder, there is only a $5 fee for the event, if a driver needs to rent a transponder, it can be done for $10, and if a driver needs to rent a transponder and pouch for use, it will be $20. Also, it is MANDATORY that all Super Late Model entries are equipped with a window net and drivers must use driving gloves, per Volunteer Speedway rules and insurance regulations.

This prestigious event, which is a must-see event for all race fans in the East Tennessee area, is being held in the memory of the late Scott Sexton, a mainstay in the East Tennessee racing scene for more than 25 years, who passed away in January 2013 at just 46 years of age. Scott began his racing career at the tender age of 6. Sexton was an 8-time World Karting Association World Champion before moving into Dirt Late Models in 1986, where he quickly became a fan favorite around East Tennessee, earning the nickname “Superman”. Between 1995 and 2005, Sexton won 10 Southern All Star Racing Series events between Atomic Speedway and Volunteer Speedway, and was the track champion in 1991 and 1995 at Volunteer Speedway, along with garnering many other special event wins. Scott was known as one of the most fan-friendly drivers in the area, always participating in charitable events and usually donating his winning trophies to children at the track. Sexton will always be remembered for giving back to the sport he loved so much.

The visit by the Southern All Star Racing Series to Volunteer Speedway will mark the tour’s first visit to the East Tennessee speedplant, which began operation during the 1974 race season, since the 2004 race season. The SAS travelers have made eleven previous visits in the tour’s history to Volunteer Speedway, with nine different winners. Only the late Scott Sexton himself and former SAS tour champion Duayne Hommel have been repeat winners in SAS competition at Volunteer Speedway with two victories each.
