How can i tell if my steering box needs a "O" ring or flare fitting.
it looks like i have a flare fitting in there now but possibly should be "O" ring
It a Z-28 box from 1967 - 1976, also have a 605 box for a spare I am wondering the same thing.
I am thinking they did not have "O" ring lines back then?

The early box should be flare and the 605 should be O-ring.

Funny this thread came up. Mine has always leaked so i finally pulled it apart. It is flared but there is a rubber o-ring that slips up around it. In looking at my flared piece part of the flare was flattened out. Is there a "factory" part to replace this or is it just a home made flare deal?

From what I've seen the flare is just a press in insert. I ground a piece of steel barinto a hook shape and pried mine out and went with a O-ring fitting because that's what I already had. I think the earlier boxes used flare and sometime around 85 switched but that's just a guess.
