so we swapped out our rack after a nasty wreck Saturday put new fluid in it and the steering is very heavy. Will the car need to run for a while to bleed out the air to allow the steering to become easier?

No it shouldn't, you have something bound up somewhere or the ps pump quit I have had the kse tandem style do that after hard wheel contact.

Is the servo the same?

Yes servo is the same. It is a remote servo style not an incorporated style. Gonna jack it up tomorrow and check for any binding and try to get any bubbles out that could be there.

we think we figured it out. on the top side of the rack there is an adjuster that puts pressure on the steering shaft. we over tightened it. backed it out a half turn or so and the rack is better than new.

well turns out that didnt fix it. rack turns fine now when the car is shut off, but after you start it up. rack is almost impossible to turn. hoses are on correctly. tested the pump and it is working. are there any valves in the rack itself that could be causing the problem?

Could be an O ring in the slave cylinder.
