Since re-opening late last Sept. under ownership of Isom’s Jarrod Breeding the 201 Speedway has had 12 Late Model races, including the events ran this season. An example of the level of competition at the 30 year old race track which at one time was an active strip mining operation is the fact that in all 12 Late model races since re- opening, Not one Late Model driver has visited victory lane as a repeat winner. This tradition of competition continued Sat. night with the running of the “Southern Steel Iron & Metal Recycling” Moonshine Runner 50 sanctioned by the Southern Regional Racing Series with 28 drivers from seven states visiting the three decade old high banked red clay oval at Sitka Ky.
Dunnville Ky driver Brad Neat posted the quickest late model qualifying effort turning a 13.562 in the Tim Logan Racing entry. Heat race wins went to Michael Wright of Isom, Allen’s Brandon Kinzer and Neat setting the field for the first annual Southern Steel Moonshiner 50 Late Model feature event. After the four wide Salute to the fans with the #18 of Kinzer rolling off from the inside starting spot, flanked to the inside by Wright’s #18. Kinzer used the outside lane off of turn two to gain the point with Wright charging back to the inside of turn three as Brandon led the field of 24 past the start finish for the first time ahead of Wright, and Olympia Ky driver Derek Fisher and an early side by side battle for fourth between the #11 of Neat and Grayson’s Jackie Boggs. The blistering pace of a long green flag run put Kinzer in lap traffic by the eleventh circuit before the caution came out for Daniel Williams’s #12D. Just after the yellow, Boggs and Fisher provided the first tense moment of the race as they touched while racing off the fourth corner, Fisher rode the outside retaining wall down the backstretch, but managed to keep his car together. When they took the green again, with Kinzer remaining in control of the lead, the best race on the track continued to be for second with Fisher and Boggs turning laps wheel to wheel until Jackie took the outside lane in turn two to overtake Fisher and set sights on Kinzer’s lead with a outside run through three and four, just clearing the #18 of Kinzer by the flag stand on lap 13. Kinzer would charge back on the new leader making his bid to return to the point with an inside challenge but two laps later Boggs would be in control of the lead with Kinzer still within striking distance of the Grayson Racer. By lap 14 it was Boggs, Kinzer, Victor Lee made his way to the 3rd spot followed by the #17 of Martin’s Shannon Thornsberry. Caution on lap 17 for the #12 of larry Gray allowed Kinzer to again make a challenge to the inside of Boggs at the entrance of the corners, however Boggs could power through the turns, leaning hard on the right rear, finding a quicker lane through the turns ahead of another side by side battle between Thornsberry and the #4 of Victor Lee. Shannon overpowered Lee at the entrance of turn one on lap 19 to claim the 3rd spot behind Kinzer and Boggs. By lap 22, Kinzer was slightly quicker at the entrance to turn one, but the outside lane proved to be the faster lane off the high side of turn two, turning back the charge of Kinzer over the next several laps and Thornsberry just a little quicker at the entrance of turn three while looking to run down Kinzer. Lap 27 had the winner of the Walter Combs Memorial Late model event, Dustin Linville getting around Thornsberry, taking the outside lane to overtake Thornsberry’s #17 for third. Linville was one of the few drivers to take his #D8 to the third racing lane off the fourth turn and make a strong charge to the front stretch challenging Kinzer’s second spot. With ten to go, Boggs continued to remain in charge up front while Kinzer again had to turn his attention to the charge of Linville who drew side by side with the Allen Ky racer by the flag stand looking like one image as they passed in front of the capacity grandstands. The next lap had Linville recorded as the second place runner, but Kinzer refused to let go of the position and fought his way back to the second position through one and two, racing the inside lane as he and Dustin continued to pass the start finish line wheel to wheel with Thornsberry right there to make it a three way battle for the second position. The next lap saw Kinzer and Thornsberry make slight contact on the front stretch, sending the early race leader, Kinzer to the pits for the remaining six circuits and Linville loosing the spot to Thornsberry. With five to go, Boggs stayed in control while second place was the most contested position as the #21 of Kenneth Howell who started 13th in the feature raced his way up to challenge Thornsberry. Howell would clear the #17 of Thornsberry, powering to the inside of Shannon to take over second with two to go. With close racing for the second spot, Grayson Ky driver Jackie Boggs took a half a straight a way advantage to the $3000.00 Southern Steel Iron & Metal Recycling Moonshine Runner 50 Late model checkers to become the 10th different winner at 201 this season in his “Trick Shot Lubricant”, “CMW Racing”, Hoosier Racing Tires”, “ Graphic Impressions” sponsored #4B. After starting in 13th, Martin County driver Kenneth Howell raced to a solid second place finish ahead of Thornberry, Dustin Linville, Jason Welshan, and Derek Fisher.
Open Wheel Modifieds were the next to take to the red clay with the #33 of Christian Baker of Whitesburg starting from the inside pole with the #13 of Josh Sexton of Mallie to the outside. Drop of the green. Baker and Sexton went side by side down the backstretch with Sexton carrying the left front tire of his 13 all the way off of turn four to the flag stand trying to run down Baker in a fierce open wheel battle. They continued their side by side race with the advantage to the inside lane by Sexton in turn three then passing the flag stand nearly even by the second lap. It would be lap four before they would line out single file with the advantage to Sexton. Lap five had Christian go a little high in turn four, opening a lane for the #35 of Jermey Hayes. The first caution was displayed on the sixth lap bunching up the field for a re start. Midway through the Open Wheel feature, former champion Dennis Deboard went hard into the turn three wall, sending his car back onto the track hard after a solid hit to the pole holding the turn three exit gate, also involved in the incident were the #22 of Keith Caudill and #00 of Kevin Harkins. After a red flag parked the drivers on the back stretch to clear up the incident when the race went back under the green, Sexton continued to hold the point and hold on for his first feature win of the season in his “Cornett Race engine” powered, “Ratliff Body Shop”, “Custom Suspension”, “Bebo’s Auto Repair” sponsored 2013 Harris Chassis. Tommy Bailey got to the finish line as the runner up after overtaking 3rd place finisher Ervin Vance of the Mudcreek Motersports team. Fourth went to the #43K of Kevin Hall with Kevin Christian completing the top five.
Bomber feature action from Sat. night had Pikeville Diesel Mechanic Colby Taylor leading from the drop of the green to the Bomber checkers in his “Mike Bullock race engine powered, “Thacker Auto Parts”, “Lloyd Hall Motersports”, “Rail Freight Transportation”, “Custom Suspension”, “High Tech Signs & Graphics” P.R.S. sponsored Monte Carlo. Three time feature winner and former track champion Jim Lemaster made a strong charge at the leader to finish a solid runner up ahead of Ryan Robertson of Salyersville and James Crowe.
Sat. night had 201 welcome one of the larger counts of four cylinder drivers to the high banks of 201 with the #24 of James Ramey and Mudcreek’s Nathan Martin sharing the front row. Martin quickly took the lead of the race with a strong run off of turn two while Logan Burke took a look to the inside of Ramey along with the #360 of James Crowe in the center of one and two nearly making it three wide before settling back in single file. By lap five the #44 of Lacy Lowe had raced his way to the front to take over second. With Martin well ahead, the race would be for second as the field took the plus one signal from flagman Bucky Tackett, Lowe faced the charge of first year driver, 13 year old Herald Whitaker Middle School Student Chase Hunley who looked to get to the outside of Lowe in turn two, then charged back at him after they took the white driving underneath to take over the runner up position on the final lap. At the payoff flag for the fourth time this season it would be Morehead University Student, Nathan Martin of the Mudcreek Motorsports nation with his fourth win of the season in the “Hall’s Auto & Muffler”, “East Ky Auto World”, “D’s Grocery”, “East Hills Heating & Cooling”, “Twin Bridge Auto Parts” #3N 1979 Mustang. The last lap moved Salyersville’s Chase Hunley to the runner up finish ahead of Lacy Lowe, James Ramey and Logan Burke.
