I have a chunk for a 9" rear end. It doesn't have a fill hole casted in it. My housing doesn't have one in it. Can I just drill and tap a plug in it. Or will it weaken it? I have never had one without one... Thanks...

I always weld half a pipe coupling to it and use a pipe plug. That way it stays out of the gear area and has more threads to tighten.

So it would be better to put it in the housing?
Confused?

Yes. Steel is easier to work with than iron.

Once you put it in housing then it will never matter what chunk you have or buy. the fill plug is always there

So keep it on center line or below?

I put it higher to ease the filling.

You might think about putting in on the left side axle tube next to the housing. That's where I added mine because it's way to get a funnel to fill and easy to get the plug in tight.
