Rebel Yell at Screven Motor Speedway Succumbs to Inclement Weather; Visit to Rome Next!
(BRASSTOWN, NORTH CAROLINA) At approximately 6:00 p.m., officials from both the Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series and Screven Motor Speedway were forced to make the decision to cancel tonight’s annual running of the ‘Rebel Yell’ at the Sylvania, Georgia speedplant. Upwards of thirty competitors were already in the pit area for the $5,300 to win program, which was set to be the fifth event of the ten race Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals miniseries. Rain started falling a little before 5:30 p.m. and after a 30 minute shower and more wet weather on the way, the decision was made to scrap tonight’s racing action.
The 14th Annual ‘Rebel Yell’ will not be rescheduled as part of the 2013 Southern Nationals tour. For those that had purchased tickets and arm bands for tonight’s race, they will be good for any other show at Screven Motor Speedway this year. More information concerning rain checks should be available online at www.screvenmotorsportscomplex.com very soon.
The cars and stars of the Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series will now make the trek back north to the historic Rome Speedway in Rome, Georgia for tomorrow night’s $5,300 to win showdown. Sunday’s race at Rome will mark the fourth visit by the barnstorming series to the 1/2-mile oval, as Chris Madden ('10), Jonathan Davenport ('11), and Clint Smith ('12) have taken the checkers in past years. All three drivers will be in attendance tomorrow evening to try to be a repeat winner at the “World’s Fastest 1/2-Mile Clay Track.” Pit gates will open at 4:00 p.m., while the drivers meeting is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Additional information on Rome Speedway can be obtained by clicking on www.raceromespeedway.com.
With four races in the books, the 2013 version of the Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series is nearing the halfway mark. Jonathan Davenport, of Blairsville, Georgia, currently leads the series point standings over Chris Madden, Billy Ogle, Jr., Vic Hill, and Eric Jacobsen. The popular driver known as “Superman” has won the last two series events at Swainsboro Raceway and East Alabama Motor Speedway, while Chris Madden (Wythe Raceway) and Vic Hill (Volunteer Speedway) have also graced victory lane.
