Sixth Annual Jason Robbins Memorial is Biggest Modified Race of the Year for Mississippi
Byram, Mississippi--August 7th. In less than a month, Jackson Motor Speedway will once again host the Jason Robbins Memorial Modified Race. The event is set for Saturday night, September 7th at the quarter-mile dirt track oval located off interstate 55 in Byram. This year's memorial race will be the 6th one in Jason's honor since he lost his life to a work accident in February of 2008. Robbins had become a well-known racer throughout the state even though he was still a young man at the time of his passing. He competed in just about every division of race cars that run in Mississippi but found his best game was in the Open Wheel Modified division driving car #4R. While Jason loved to compete, he also loved helping others that he raced with. Turning wrenches for other drivers, loaning out what he had and just being "one of the guys" was all a big part of who he was and wanted to be. Jason Robbins will always be remembered for the camaraderie he shared with others as well as being that fierce competitor that they had to beat if they wanted to win. His best friend Ryan Allday still competes in the Modified division and has carried Jason's #4R on the side of his car since 2008 along with the same type of "racer's heart" that Jason had.
Dirt track racing participants have always considered themselves as one big family. Although safety within the sport is much better today, there is still a risk there and unfortunately, fatalities still occasionally happen on the track but the ones away from the track hurt that whole family of racers just as much. A trend of memorial races has developed over the years. One of the ways racers remember another racer, especially one as well-liked as Jason was, is to get together and name a race after them. Then "they" -- the families, friends, track owners, sponsors, fans and everyone down to the final entrant -- go about the task of putting it all together to make the event the best it can be and one their fellow fallen racer would be proud of year-after-year.
Such is the case with the Jason Robbins Memorial and without great sponsors, you don't get to have an event this large. Special thanks goes out to Decorative Center of Jackson, Excavating Specialty Company, Hodge Sawdust, HMP Graphics and Roofing with Strength. The Jason Robbins Memorial is also grateful to Don Cliburn and his staff at Jackson Motor Speedway for hosting the event and to additional sponsors, Carey's Construction, Tony Barnett Heating and Cooling, Powell Skid Steer Services-Forestry Mulching, Taylor Flying Services, Employment Express Services and South Central Construction.
Thanks to folks like those mentioned above, the Jason Robbins Memorial Race has grown bigger every year too. The 2013 edition boasts a Modified purse alone of over $15,000 with a winner's share of $4004 (the extra "4" also in Jason's honor) which is outstanding money for the Modified class. In fact, it's the largest Modified purse in the state of Mississippi for 2013. This purse includes a remarkable paydown that pays $3000 for second, $2000 for third, $1000 for fourth, $800 for fifth and for the first time in JRM history, there will be no entry fee for this race. Just bring the car in, buy a pit pass and go racing. Twenty-two cars will qualify for the main event and each one will be guaranteed a minimum of $200 to start. There will also be a special "Lucky Dog" drawing where one racer who failed to make the top 22 can draw the 23rd starting position which is also worth a minimum of $200 to that lucky driver as well. In a change from the 2012 race format, time trials will return this year and be part of the qualifying process. Frith Trucking will sponsor the Fast Time Award with $100 and USA Tire & Automotive will sponsor a $100 Hard Charger Award for the A-main feature event as well.
Other classes racing at this year's memorial event include a new class from west of the Mississippi. The Limited Modified division (called Southern Sport Mods at some circles) has some of the largest car counts of in the states of Louisiana and Texas. These cars have a similar appearance to their older Modified cousins but utilize full pure stock GM metric frames. They also have stricter engine rules but use softer tires and larger spoilers. The bottom line is, they still go fast! Thanks to Watson Quality Ford and Dugas Trading Post Wrecking Service (of Denham Springs, Louisiana), the Limited Modified division will also be part of Jason's race this year and pay $1000 to win and $100 just to start the feature with just a $10 registration fee required. Also racing will be the Nesmith Late Model division ($1000 to win!) and the Nesmith Street Stocks.
While the biggest winner of the night may be that Modified feature winner who gets the four thousand and four dollars, it's the fans who are also going to be the big winners at this one. Grandstand adult admission is a bargain at just $10 to get in. Kids 7 to 12 years of age are $5 and 6 and under are free. Pit passes are $30. Kids from age 7 through 12 who are accompanied by an adult in the pits are just $15 and 6 and under are again, free. You can't beat those kind of prices for this one-of-a-kind Mississippi special event.
