Steel block 18* heads 362 cid making around 650hp on a fairly conservative dyno. Is there really any need for anything bigger or more powerful?

I don't think so. If you are freed up even on the bigger more hooked up tracks, you are ok. On slicker tracks, you will still have to detune it.

With a UMP tire, and that cubic inch (362) you will have to twist the bejesus out of it.
It more than likely has no torque, and what gets a car off the corners.....torque.
Horsepower numbers do not mean crap, torque is what moves a car.
One of my motors years ago was under 400 CI and it had 625 torque, and 650ish HP on alky.
Won more money and features with that combo than any.

This engine is in an asphalt modified now and just purchased a Larry Shaw car, have not seen the dyno sheets to know what the torque #'s are. I do know it will get off the corner really hard on pavement, and they turn it 8500 rpm's now.

Well,(Torque X RPM) / 5252 = HPSo if you have 500 ft pounds at 5000 rpms you have 2500000/5252 = 476 hp.Raise that to 500ft pounds at 5500 rpms and you have 523.5hp.The point I'm making is this:Where you make power matters such as this torque peak deal I illustrated. >Cubic Inches need more Air flow capacity to make peak torque at >higher rpm than the equivalent

You can win some late model races with that.

You can be very competitive with 650 horse engine if it has good torque. If it doesn't have a lot of torque it probably won't be enough if track is heavy. Good luck
