CARTERSVILLE, GA – Trey Bright of Coker, AL and Kevin Spears of Fayette, AL went into Week 24 of NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division competition tied for the point lead. They met head-to-head on Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS in a race that may have decided the 2013 Championship.

Bright won the race in the AKA Cores Chevrolet, which was an amazing story after a trying seven days just to get to the race track. Spears finished a close second, but it was an effort that might have brought an end to his Championship hopes and his 2013 season. Bright was able net four points, and Spears netted one point, giving Bright a three point lead in the standings.

On August 31 at Jackson Motor Speedway in Jackson, MS, Bright was involved in a crash that destroyed his race car. He had been building a new car for the 2014 NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division season, and that project was accelerated in an effort to race again the next Saturday at Whynot Motorsports Park.

Many long hours in the shop, including an all-nighter on Friday night, got Bright to Meridian, MS with a new, untried and untested race car. The win made all of the extra hours and hard work in the shop worth the effort. Spears did all he could to challenge for the lead, but his Ross Desigz.com Chevrolet was not up to the task, and further inspection the next day would tell the tale why.

In the effort to battle Bright for the win, the Chevrolet Performance 602 Crate Engine in Spears’ race car suffered some damage. Spears posted his findings on his Facebook page on Monday morning, and said he didn’t have the funds to make the proper repairs. Spears announced that if he couldn’t find some additional sponsorship help, his Championship run was over.

Bright was a guest on the NeSmith Race Report on Tuesday night, and he said he was disappointed that Spears was prematurely ending his season with three weeks to go. He said he didn’t want to win the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Championship by default, but on the race track.

The new NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division point leader said if he had an engine at the shop, he would loan it to Spears, but he said he didn’t have one. Spears is the only driver that can beat Bright for the Championship.

After taking the win at Whynot Motorsports Park on Saturday night, Bright now has a best 14 week total of 693 points after nine wins, 18 top five finishes and 21 top ten finishes in 27 races.
