CARTERSVILLE, GA – There will be a 2013 NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Champion, but we won’t know which name to put on the trophy until either Sunday morning, or perhaps the next Sunday morning. It will be either Trey Bright of Coker, AL, or Kevin Spears of Fayette, AL. We won’t know which one it is until several scenarios play themselves out.

There will only be two opportunities for NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division drivers to earn points in Week 26 competition. Hattiesburg Motorsports Park in Hattiesburg, MS will be in action this Friday night, and Jackson Motor Speedway in Jackson, MS will host a $1,000-to-win race this Saturday night co-sanctioned by the Mississippi Street Stock Series.

Bright has a three point lead over Spears heading into NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Week 26 competition, with two weeks to go in the 2013 season. Bright has a best 14 week total of 693 points and Spears has a best 14 week total of 690 points. Over the final two weeks of competition, both drivers will try to net on 48s, meaning they each have to finish first or second to gain any points.

The 2013 NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Championship could be decided as early as this week. What is unknown is whether or not Spears will find a ride for the last two weeks of the season. As of Tuesday night, Spears was still rideless. If Spears fails to net any points in Week 26 competition, Bright is the Champion.

If Bright drives to a 50-point win in Week 26 competition, he is the 2013 NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Champion. If they both turn in a second-place finish, Bright is the Champion. To stay in the championship hunt, Spears has to be within two points of Bright at the end of the weekend.

If Spears finds a ride, and finishes first or second with Bright finishing third on back and not netting any points in NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Week 26 competition, we go to the 27th and final week of the season to decide the title. Going to Week 27 to decide the title on the last week of the season sets up another long list of scenarios that include tie-breakers.

While Bright and Spears are the only two NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Championship contenders, there are still 12 other drivers in the Top 20 of the point standings that still have a chance to earn a Top 10 points fund-paying position in the last two weeks of the 2013 season.

Calvin Cook of Pace, FL is third in the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division standings, and Roger Flynn of Denham Springs, LA is in the fourth spot nipping at Cook’s heels. Reports indicate Cook is on vacation and out of the country this weekend, so he will rest on his best 14 week total of 672 points. Flynn has a best 14 week total of 668 points.

So, while Cook floats around somewhere in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico this weekend, Flynn will be trying to net on a 42. That means if Flynn finishes fourth or better in NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Week 26 competition, he will pass Cook for the third spot. Adam Cheeks of Guntown, MS also has a chance to end the season in the third spot.

Cheeks has a best 14 week total of 658 points and can net on a 41 and a 42 in the final two weeks of the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division season, and can earn a possible 675 points. Looking ahead to Week 27, Cook will be trying to net on a 46 and can earn a possible total of 676 points. Flynn can net on two 42s the last two weeks of the season and earn a possible 684 points.

Dave Nations of Raymond, MS is sixth in the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division standings with a best 14 week total of 650 points, and can net on two 41s with the potential to earn a total of 668 points. Mark Barnett of Aberdeen, MS is seventh with a best 14 week total of 647 points and can net on two 41s in an attempt to earn a possible 665 points.

Jeremy Flurry of Smithville, MS is eighth in the standings with a best 14 week total of 642 points and he can earn a possible 660 points by netting on a pair of 41s in the final two weeks of the season. Brandon Leftwich of Meridian, MS is ninth in the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division standings with a best 14 week total of 637 points, and he will be trying to net on two 43s with the potential to earn a total of 651 points.

Eddie Willis of Saucier, MS rounds out the Top 10 in the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division standings with a best 14 week total of 634 points, and he will be trying to net on two 41s in final two weeks of the season and earn a possible total of 652 points. There are four drivers in the second ten of the points chase that still have a mathematical chance to move up to the Top 10.

Wayne Medders of Morton, MS is 11th in the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division standings with a best 14 week total of 631 points, and will be trying to net on two 41s and the potential to earn a total of 649 points. Jeffrey Walker Meridian, MS is 12th with a best 14 week total of 625 points and will be looking to have a potential total of 643 points by netting on two 41s.

Donnie Monk of Florence, MS is 15th in the standings with a best 14 week total of 593 points, and he will be looking to net on two 25s with the possibility to earn a total of 643 points. Kevin Whittington of Brandon, MS is 17th in the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division standings, and still has one more week to earn full points. Whittington can then net on a 41 the final week of the season with the potential to earn a total of 648 points.

Drivers that race at NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division tracks compete against each other through a points system that counts a driver’s best 14 weekly point totals during the 27-week season that runs through September 29. A perfect 14-week point score is 700 which represents 14 50-point wins.

Once a driver reaches the 14th week of competition they begin netting points by replacing the lowest weekly point total among their best 14 with a higher weekly point total. The 2013 NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division champion will pocket $2,000 and the National point fund pays back to the Top 10 drivers at the end of the season.

A win with a car count of eight or more is worth 50 points and drops one point per position back to tenth spot. Drivers that finish tenth through field in the main event earn 41 points. Drivers that attempt to compete, but fail to start the main event earn 25 points. A win with a car count of less than eight is worth 40 points and drops back one point per position.
