Will a manual trans out of a 1980 2.3 turbo mustang bolt up to my pinto 2.3 that has an automatic. Probably a stupid question, but I have no knowledge on this, just learning. Thanks, Leon

Yes the Mustang trans will bolt up to your Pinto 2.3L. They are one in the same.

Just be sure you put a pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft.

they are not quite the same. the mustang (fox body) trans has a longer bell housing and input shaft. it also uses different top bell housing mount holes then the pinto. the tail housing is also different and uses a different shifter. as long as you keep the correct bell housing with the trans it goes with you should be ok. all fox body german trans had the 2.14 2nd gear. the pinto trans had a number of 2nd gear ratios from 1.81 to 2.14.

ryan, the mustang (fox body) uses the 3 bolt shifter while the pinto uses the screw in shifter. they are both a german design with a 23 spline input shaft.

Olin. I was saying the 2.3 Pinto engine is the same as a Mustang 2.3 as far as "mounting" the trans. I did not say a Pinto trans is the same as a Mustang trans. Just clearing that up.

no problem foghorn. i was pointing out the small differences between the two. the clutch arm and pivot ball can also be different. like you said it should bolt up with no problem as long as they have the correct mix of parts.
