CARTERSVILLE, GA – NeSmith Racing has joined the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and Thunder Road Museum in Dawsonville, GA to establish a new tradition for the Champion in the top Division, in that the Champion’s race car will be on display in the town square the week of the NeSmith Racing Annual Awards Banquet which is held each year at the museum.

Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and Thunder Road Museum Board Chairman Gordon Pirkle also announced that the month of January, around the NeSmith Racing Annual Awards Banquet, will now be known as the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Month of Dirt in recognition of the rich history of dirt track racing in the Peach State.

This year’s NeSmith Racing Annual Awards Banquet will be held at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and Thunder Road Museum on Saturday night, January 18. The race car of the 2013 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division National Champion Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN will be on display in the Dawsonville, GA town square the week of the banquet.

“By having the NeSmith Awards Banquet at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and having the NeSmith Championship race car on display in the Dawsonville Town Square, it really gets the interest in dirt track racing going, and it gives me a chance to tell people what it’s all about,” Pirkle said. “A lot of people come through the Hall, especially in late January, on their way to Florida for Speedweeks, and we’re proud to have our dirt track cars on display.”

This tradition began last year when the race car of the 2012 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Champion, Dawsonville-native Matthew Turner, was put on display in the Dawsonville, GA town square the week of the banquet. This year marks the third straight year the NeSmith Racing Awards Banquet has been held at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.

Pirkle said Johnson’s championship race car will be one of many dirt track race cars on display in the Dawsonville Town Square during the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Moth of Dirt.

“We’re in the process now of bringing in a lot more dirt cars into the Museum for the Month of Dirt, and we will be rotating some of those cars into the Town Square Display,” Pirkle said. “The dirt tracks of Georgia have a rich history, especially in the early days of the sport.”

NeSmith Racing Founder and CEO Mike Vaughn shares Pirkle’s deep pride in the history of Georgia dirt track racing, and is proud to be able to showcase the four Divisions of NeSmith Racing by having the Annual Awards Banquet at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and Thunder Road Museum.

“We’re proud to have established our Annual Awards Banquet each year at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, and be the only sanctioning body to have this distinction,” Vaughn said. “I have to thank Matthew Turner’s father David “Turkey” Turner for getting us together with the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and Gordon Pirkle. Gordon and his staff have been great to work with, and they have gone out of their way to accommodate us with our banquet, which has grown each of the three years it has been held at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.”

Vaughn said the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame is the perfect place to celebrate the top drivers in the four NeSmith Racing Divisions each year, as the series has deep roots in the Peach State.

“We will begin our tenth season in 2014, and NeSmith Racing has created some deep rooted Georgia traditions, so the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame is the right place to celebrate our season each year,” Vaughn said. “The series is based in my hometown of Cartersville, GA, our series Title Sponsor NeSmith Chevrolet, Buick, GMC is located in Claxton, GA, and three former Champions of the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series are from Georgia – 2005 Champion Denny Slayton of Ringgold, GA, 2008 Champion Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA, and the 2012 Champion Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA.”

For this year’s NeSmith Racing Annual Awards Banquet, the Top 10 drivers from two new Divisions will join the Top 10 Drivers in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division and NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series for non-touring dirt late model drivers. The two new Divisions are the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series and the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division.

Joining Johnson as 2013 NeSmith Racing Champions are the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage Weekly Racing Series Champion Noah Daspit of Kiln, MS, the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series Champion William Thomas of Phenix City, AL, and the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Champion Trey Bright of Coker, AL.
