CARTERSVILLE, GA – The 2013 and first Top 10 Class of the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series will be honored on Saturday night during the NeSmith Racing Annual Awards Banquet at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame in Dawsonville, GA. William Thomas of Phenix City, AL will be crowned the first Champion of the series.

Thomas carried on the winning tradition as the third generation racer of a Hall of Fame racing family by taking four victories in seven races on his way to the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series title. Thomas will collect the $10,000 top prize out of the $30,000 point fund for America’s first “Factory Backed and Factory Built” dirt late model series.

The Champion’s four wins in the Alexander’s Industrial Service GRT came at Penton Raceway in Penton, AL, East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL, Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS and Clarksville Speedway in Clarksville, TN. Along with the four wins, Thomas also had six top five finishes and seven top ten finishes to earn 674 points.

The road to the Chevrolet Super Late Model Series title wasn’t a cakewalk for Thomas, as several drivers behind him in the point standings pushed him hard at every event in their super dirt late model race cars powered by the all-aluminum Chevrolet Performance CT525 Engine based on the production Chevrolet LS3 Engine at comes in the Chevrolet Corvette, the Chevrolet Camaro, and the Chevrolet SS.

Tim Busha of Boaz, AL and Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN both turned in 628 points at the end of the inaugural Chevrolet Super Late Model Series season. Busha won the tie-breaker with two wins to none for Johnson.

In his first season following a traveling series, Busha drove the Kilpatrick Racing GRT to two wins coming at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS and the Dega 100 at his home track, Talladega Short Track. Along with the two wins, Busha had five top five finishes and six top ten finishes in seven races.

Johnson ended the first Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series season in the third spot of the point standings with five top five finishes and six top ten finishes in seven races to accumulate 628 points. The National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee drove the Tommy Pope Construction Warrior in 2013 Chevy Super Series competition.

Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA finished fourth in the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series with 622 points in seven races with one win, three top five finishes and seven top ten finishes driving the Hedman Husler Special. That single win of the season for Turner was considered by many to be the most exciting victory of the season.

Turner’s win came on the high-banks of the Bad Fast Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, TN. On a restart, Turner came from fourth to first by daring to go higher than anyone else dared on the 3/8-mile speed bowl. Thomas and Busha were battling side-by-side for the lead with Thomas on the inside and Busha running what is traditionally the outside groove at Tazewell Speedway.

Matthew Turner must not have received that memo about the outside groove at The Taz. Turner got a run going down the backstretch and set his race car up in the groove outside of the outside groove. The fans in the packed house arose to their feet anticipating Turner’s race car to sail out of the ballpark and into the darkness of the East Tennessee night.

The race car somehow defied physics, stayed on the racing surface, and Turner drove off the fourth turn into the lead. As the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series drivers had done all season, Turner gave the fans a taste of a new breed of dirt late model action that has become the trademark of the Chevy Super Series. Two and three-wide racing was the rule, rather than the exception, all season long.

Brent Barrett of Cleveland, MS was impressive in his first season in a super dirt late model, as he drove the Custom Spraying, Inc. GRT to the fifth spot in the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series standings with 604 points. In seven starts, Barrett had two top five finishes and seven top ten finishes.

Adam Martin of Talladega, AL finished sixth in the 2013 Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series standings with 558 points with one top five finish and four top ten finishes in seven races driving the Seal Insurance Special. Chase Edge of LaFayette, AL was seventh in the standings with 536 points after three top five finishes in seven races driving the Edge’s Gas Company Special.

Ross Martin of Talladega, AL drove the Blake Dorsett Trucking GRT to the eighth spot in the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series standings after one top five finish and three top ten finishes to accumulate 520 points. Both Ross Martin, and his son Adam Martin, were also making their first ventures on a traveling series in 2013 with the Chevy Super Series.

David Brannon of Elora, TN was ninth in the standings with 512 points after driving the Elora Gin Company Special to one top five finish and six top ten finishes in six races. Brad Smith of Winston-Salem, NC rounds out the Top 10 of the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series standings with 510 ten points after one top ten finish in seven races driving the Velocita Special.

The 2014 Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series season will begin on March 15 at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL with a 50-lap $3,000-to-win $300-to-start event.
