Ray Cook Eyes Bama Bash at EAMS Following Busy Speedweeks in Georgia & Florida

(BRASSTOWN, NORTH CAROLINA) Ray Cook is back in the Tarheel State today following a hectic “Speedweeks” schedule in Georgia and Florida from February 6-15. Ray competed in both the ‘Super Bowl of Racing’ at Golden Isles Speedway in Brunswick, Georgia and the ‘Winternationals’ at East Bay Raceway Park in Gibsonton, Florida. In all, Ray entered twelve programs – sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series – during his stint down south and racked up one win, two Top Fives, and seven Top Tens.

The Brasstown, North Carolina pilot reached victory lane in NeSmith competition during the afternoon show at Golden Isles on Friday, February 7! Ray qualified ninth fastest during time trials prior to picking up the win in his B-Main. The popular driver known as the "Tarheel Tiger" then advanced from his ninth starting position in the 30-lap main event to grab the point on the 26th circuit. Ray then led the remainder of the distance to record the $2,500 triumph over Jak Kicklighter, Joey Coulter, Mack McCarter, and Scott Lagasse, Jr. He also notched an impressive third place effort in the $2,500 to win NeSmith showdown held on Friday night at GIS, as he finished behind only victor Jason Fitzgerald and runner-up Jeremy Faircloth.

Behind the wheel of the MasterSbilt House Car at Brunswick, Ray’s best run of the weekend came in the ‘Super Bowl of Racing’ finale on Saturday, February 8. After rolling off from the outside of the fifth row in the $10,000 to win feature event, Ray moved past four competitors during the 50-lap televised race to score a solid sixth place effort.

The Optima Batteries #53 team then spent the last week at East Bay competing in the six-race ‘Winternationals’ at the Tampa-area facility. Ray was slowed by some mechanical troubles throughout the week at the “Clay by the Bay,” but was still able to accumulate four Top Ten performances in five Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series feature events. His best finish of eighth came in both the opener on Monday, February 10 and in the Saturday afternoon show on February 15. Ray emerged from “Speedweeks” eighth in the LOLMDS point standings, but only 65 markers from the top five. Ray is scheduled to enjoy the upcoming February 21-22 weekend off from racing action, but will return to competition the following weekend at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, Alabama. The 17th Annual ‘Bama Bash’ will be held at EAMS on February 28-March 1 and the winner of the National Dirt Racing League (NDRL) extravaganza will receive a hefty $17,017 payday. Qualifying and heat races are slated for Friday night at the historic oval, while the big weekend will culminate on Saturday evening with consolation races and the 75-lap A-Main.
