Boyd Speedway Official Results 4-5-2014
(Chattanooga, Ringgold, Georgia) With Mother Nature taking victory’s in all classes last week it was back to business and another opportunity for each racer to get down and dirty on the 1/3 mile clay oval. First we rolled each class out for their qualifying heat races which determines their respected starting position for each of the nights Feature Events. Heat Race Winners were: B-Hobby-Jason Emahiser and Dallas Brooks, Crate Late Model Winners were #A1 Rick Hixson and #T16 Jacob Grizzle. In A-Hobby #J4 Jake Caldwell and Dalton’s Jeff Allen, Steel Headed Late Models were captured by #T6 Todd Hernandez and #T22 Mike Tinker and the last Heat Winners were Koty Campbell and Mike Fitzgerald in Pony Division.

The first of tonight Features brought out the FWD/PONY Division with Georgetown’s Koty Campbell leading the field to the green from the pole position, he took the lead on lap one and never looked back. Koty following in his Dad’s footsteps it was good to see a Campbell back in victory circle in the Pony Division. His Dad Kenny Campbell dominated this division at about every track that ran that class for a great number of years. Koty thanked his Mom and Dad in victory lane for all his help and guidance. Campbell was followed by Mike Fitzgerald, Nathan Hair, James Dykes and James Salisbury.

The “Heavy Weights B-Hobby Division” was brought to the front stretch and lined up for the nights feature event. Dallas Brooks starting on the outside front row could see clear race track in front from the beginning and it didn’t take long to be the one out front that everyone else was chasing. Brooks held on to the lead and crossed the line in front of Jim Gilbert, Ronnie Kerr, Jason Emahisher and Boonie Gullet.

The A-Hobby Division were lined up and ready to go but a new unfamiliar car found it sitting on the pole. Chickamauga’s Jake Caldwell was primed for his first ever Feature Victory but had 20 laps to prove he was good enough on this night. An early caution on lap 1 slowed the field for a multiple car crash in turn 1 sending Jacob Stewart and Brent Clark to the pits with heavy front end damage. Once back underway Caldwell seems to settle in from the top spot, but an early and often battle with Soddy Daisy’s Brandon Stanfield kept the pressure on Caldwell. On lap 15 a new driver was now dogging Caldwell for the lead as Current Division Champion Beau Bice was now on the rear bumper of Caldwell. Bice was challenging from the bottom and Caldwell ran the middle lap after lap. Caldwell knew he was there and knew if he slipped or made a mistake Bice would have the lead. Bice knew Caldwell would be unfamiliar especially in lapped traffic, but on this night Caldwell drove like a pro and worked the traffic like a seasoned veteran and held off every move Bice through at him and capture his First Ever Feature Event. Caldwell finished in front of Bice, Brandon Stanfield, Jeff Allen and John Clark.

The 21 car field of Crate Late Models was primed and ready for their 25 lap Feature Event. Soddy Daisy’s Rick Hixson along with Jacob Grizzle led the field to the green flag. Hixson would take the early lead followed by now Kenny Kizzar. A lap 3 caution would slow the field to allow the D2 of David Duplissey to turn his ride around after spinning in turn 3. Once back under green Hixson now had a fellow Soddy Daisy racer on his bumper. Jerry Coffman had come to 2nd place from his 8th place starting position in just 6 laps. Hixson’s question now was how he could hold off Coffman for next 19 laps. Both Hixson and Coffman had put some distance between themselves and the remainder of the field. Hixson on this night seemed to work the lap traffic just a little better than Coffman. Hixson would take the victory and during a post-race interview he thanked his sponsors, wife and family and said he knew Jerry was there but on this night he was just a little lucky to have started up front. Hixson was followed by Coffman, David Tinker, Jeff Smith (after having to rebuild the entire front portion of his racing machine due to an early heat race crash and started in the 21st starting position) rounding out the top five was Craig Burrows.

The Steel Late Models were in tow around the 1/3 mile clay oval by the Official Boyd Speedway Mtn View Chevy Pace Truck readying their machine for their 30 lap feature. Todd Hernandez had the field in tow and looked to be on his way to his first victory in a while, but while leading he tangled with lap car driven by Gene Atchley in turn 1 sending Hernandez into the outside wall at full speed. The damage was too extensive to repair and his ride was towed to the pits. This handed the lead over to Mike Tinker but his reign at the top was short lived as mechanical issues caused him to park his ride 3 laps later. Now the Ringgold Kid Jamie Perry was now up front with clear track in front and he set sail. A lap 12 caution saw the #L88 of Mike Brumlow hit the backstretch wall so hard that emergency crews were brought out during the red flag conditions to check him out. We sometime forget just how thankful we should be for the safety of this racing machine but on this night it was very apparent. Once back underway Perry never looked back and captures his second victory in a row. Perry was followed by John Owenby, Brannon Armatige, DJ Hayes, and Andy Standridge.
A great night of racing, thanks to the crew for their hard work getting the races over by 10:05
