Appalachian Mtn. Speedweek mourns the loss of friend & sponsor Paul “Huey” Wilcoxon; will name the Championship trophy in honor of the veteran car builder…

With a heavy heart, the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek, in conjunction with Bob and Diane Harbaugh would like to announce that starting in 2014; the Speedweek Championship trophy will be awarded in memory of friend and sponsor Paul “Huey” Wilcoxon. Huey’s life was unexpectedly cut short on April 18th after a single car accident cause by an apparent heart attack.

“This of course is a tough deal for the whole racing community” stated series co-promoter Kurt Smith. “Huey was the type of person who would help anyone out, it didn’t matter if you drove one of his cars or not. He was also a very good friend of title sponsor Bob Harbaugh. Bob and I spoke Easter Sunday about this deal and wanted to make sure as a series, we kept Huey’s memory alive. This is not just for this year; Huey will be a part of our series for as long as we are in existence. He was such an innovator in our sport, and we want to make sure the Paul “Huey” Wilcoxon Memorial Championship Trophy is something unique and special. Bob and I both agreed without question that Huey and MBH Race Cars will always be a part of the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek. Huey was great to bounce ideas off regarding speedweek, he always provided guidance to us in a way that would benefit the sport as a whole, not just himself or his team. That’s the kind of person he was and that is the kind of legacy that will live on.”

The speedweek staff is working on some other ways to celebrate Huey’s life and dedication to the sport during the 4 race mini-speedweek that starts May 30th.
