2014 Chargin’ Charlie Grinestaff Memorial set for Speedweek finale at Port Royal Monday night.

When the 2014 edition of the Harbaugh Amusement Appalachian Mountain Speedweek roles into Port Royal Speedway for the series finale this coming Monday it will have special meaning. As in years past, the series last race has been in memory of one of Central Pennsylvania’s late model legends. This year the venue might be different but the legend lives on with the 7th running of the Chargin’ Charlie Grinestaff Memorial.

Charlie Grinestaff took to the area speedways in the 1950’s driving a flathead jalopy. That time period in racing was truly for the brave as there were no safety regulations or protective clothing. Charlie barnstormed through the Mid-Atlantic and it did not take long for his name to be known simultaneously with Victory lane. If fact, in his career, Charlie visited victory lane 44 times throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. One of his biggest win came in the annual 100 lapper at Saluda, Virginia.

Although born in Johnson City, Tennessee, Charlie moved to the Central Pennsylvania area at a very young age. From a family of farmers, Charlie first sat behind the wheel at the age of ten when he started running the family tractor in the fields. Growing up near Lincoln Speedway, Charlie early in his career took a liking to Lincoln Speedway and it did not take long for Lincoln Speedway to take a liking to Charlie. Known for his flashy appearance with his orange shirt and orange socks as well as his hard charging style on the speedway, Grinestaff was an immediate fan favourite. Charlie Grinestaff was a fixture at area race tracks and kept his passion for racing right up until he passed away. When discussions are had, talking about the history and heroes of this sport, Charlie Grinestaff’s name always rises to the head of the list.

This Monday night make sure you come to Port Royal Speedway and join Terry Grinestaff and family to honor one of the best as today’s late model stars take to the speedway in the memory of a true legend.

Dan Stone, Jason Covert, last year’s winner Rick Eckert, defending series champ Gregg Satterlee, Kenny Pettyjohn, Vic Coffey, Austin Hubbard, Jamie Lathroum and many more are expected in attendance to do battle with the Port Royal Regulars all looking for that coveted Charlie Grinestaff Memorial Trophy.

Also on the card that night is a limited late model special that is open to any all steel, solid block 358 late model as well as Port Royal’s 355econo late model division.
