CARTERSVILLE, GA – The battle for the $20,000 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Championship is getting hot like the summer breeze. So when the temperatures rise, one must head for the mountains. That where the next two NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS races will be held and will honor the memory of two Southeastern legends.

The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series will make its first visit to Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, NC this Friday night for the $2,000-to-win Bill Hendren Memorial 40 Presented By Hendren Racing Engines and Crate Insider.com.

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, Tri-County Race Track as a new venue, levels the playing field for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series regulars, who will take on a strong contingent of regulars more familiar with the track.

On Saturday night it’s the $4,000-to-win 3rd Annual J.T. Kerr Memorial 40 at 411 Motor Speedway in Seymour, TN. Not only does 411 Motor Speedway also have a strong field of weekly NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series regulars, but the top two drivers in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division are also very much acquainted with the track at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountains.

With Tri-County Race Track being a new stop on the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series schedule, there is a clean canvas and an exciting anticipation for the series to begin painting a colorful new history. Can a series regular figure the joint out in short order, or will a local hero make a name for himself on the national stage of dirt late model racing this Friday night?

At 411 Motor Speedway, the historical picture is clearly one of exciting racing that has shown both drivers’ success and disappointment. But either way, the fans have not worn out the seats because they been either on the edge of them, or on their feet over what they’ve seen.

The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point leader Mack McCarter of Gatlinburg, TN is coming home with a two-point advantage in the standings over the defending NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Champion and National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN.

McCarter is still looking for his first career NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series win. In nine races this season, McCarter has a series-lead five top five finishes, and three of those are second-place finishes. Logic would indicate that McCarter would be poised to become the 66th different winner in the ten-year history of the series at his home track.

Logic can be misleading. McCarter has top ten finishes in seven of his nine starts. That means there have been two races this season where the 20-year-old driver has finished outside the top ten. Just when one thinks there’s no place like home, those two races for McCarter came at 411 Motor Speedway on April 4 and 5.

McCarter finished those two races and parked his race car in front of the door of his shop just behind turns three and four of 411 Motor Speedway with a pair of 13th-place finishes. But the fog of disappointment for McCarter at his home track may be clearing.

In past seasons, McCarter has proven that he can be a front runner at his home track. In 2012, McCarter ran with the leaders in the Inaugural J.T. Kerr Memorial 40 and finished a very respectable 4th. McCarter was running 5th in last year’s race before a mechanical problem sent him to the pit area just past the halfway point.

So what changed for 2014 at 411 Motor Speedway that Mack McCarter has had trouble wrapping his arms around? The track, man! The track! In past seasons, 411 Motor Speedway was a sail around top speed plant. During the off-season, the configuration and the banking of the track was adjusted and loads of new clay topped off the project.

During the first half of the season, the bottom groove of 411 Motor Speedway came into play. Those that were used to running the outside now went rim riding at their own peril as they watched their fellow competitors dive underneath them for position. But fear not rim riding rodeo cowboys, the cushion is returning at 411 Motor Speedway.

Now, with a half a season on it, the new clay surface at 411 Motor Speedway is widening it arms to accommodate multiple racing grooves. The top groove is back and fast, while the inside groove is still the short way around. It’s now up to the drivers to choose which flight path they want to take in the quest for the checkered flag.

So while McCarter hopes to once again find his fast wheelhouse at his home track, Johnson will arrive, probably just before qualifying, to a track he always looks forward to unloading his Fast 5 race car. As the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series has painted a three-year history at 411 Motor Speedway, Johnson has been its Rembrandt.

Watching The Chattanooga Flash in a race a 411 Motor Speedway is in itself worth the price of admission. Start him anywhere you like, get comfortable on the edge of that bleacher seat and watch him come to the front of the pack.

The 2012 J.T. Memorial 40 saw Johnson come from eighth to second. Then he got serious. Last year, Johnson started fourth, took the lead just past the halfway point, and won the 2nd Annual J.T. Kerr Memorial 40. There were twin features that day. Johnson started sixth in the second race and won that 50 lapper.

Two wins in one day at 411 Motor Speedway led Johnson to get on a roll towards winning the $20,000 2013 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Championship.

Like McCarter on April 4, the new configuration and surface at 411 Motor Speedway may have thrown Johnson a curveball. He started 13th, moved up to ninth early in the race, but faded at the end and finished 11th. But the series came back the next night, and Johnson made some adjustments to get back to his old self.

Johnson started tenth in the 50 lap race, and put on a passing clinic. He didn’t win, but he was a close second. This Saturday night, Johnson returns to 411 Motor Speedway, like he did last year for the J.T. Memorial Race, in title contention. McCarter comes in to the Mountain Madness weekend with 704 points, and Johnson is in second with 702 points.

Series regulars expected to join McCarter and Johnson for Rounds 10 and 11 of the 2014 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series season are Walker Arthur of Forest, VA, Rookie of the Year point leader Chris Noah of Rainbow City, AL, Brent Barrett of Cleveland, MS, Michael Blount of Sumrall, MS, Ashley Newman of Ripley, TN, Justin McRee of Woodstock, AL, Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS, Ronald Dunn of Corinth, MS, Marcus Minga of Shannon, MS, and Chase Edge of LaFayette, AL.

A strong group of West North Carolina and East Tennessee drivers will be awaiting for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series travelers in an effort to keep the big at home this Friday night at Tri-County Race Track and 411 Motor Speedway.

Jacob Anderson of Murphy, NC will compete in front of the hometown fans with past NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series experience with one top ten finish in four races this season along with Jason Deal of Copperhill, TN and Jacob Grizzle of Blairsville, GA. Jimmy Elliott of Cleveland, TN has two series career wins on his resume, the latest coming at 411 Motor Speedway on April 4.

Adam Beeler of Knoxville, TN took the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series win at 411 Motor Speedway on April 5 and also has two NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series wins at 411 Motor Speedway this season. Todd Morrow of East Ridge, TN also has a NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS career win trophy on his mantle.

Greg Martin of Oliver Springs, TN picked up the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series win at 411 Motor Speedway last Saturday night after a heart-stopping side-by-side duel with Anderson. Ryan King of Seymour, TN has a pair of NeSmith Chevrolet WRS 411 Motor Speedway wins this season, and defending track champion Rusty Ballenger of Sevierville, TN also has a win.

Other local favorites expected for the two race Mountain Madness are Jason Welshan of Maryville, TN, Rick Hixson of Soddy Daisy, TN, Jake Teague of Oliver Springs, TN, Todd Coffman of Parksville, KY, Brad Coffey of Maryville, TN, Josh Henry of Newport, TN, Marty Calloway of Maynardville, TN, Brad Seagle of Seymour, TN, Warren McMahan of Dandridge, TN, Brian Courtney of Knoxville, TN, Roger Best of Maryville, TN, Jensen Ford of Piney Flats, TN, Brett Wyatt of Crossville, TN, Tanner Works of Cleveland, TN and William Overbey of Norris, TN.
