Tornado cross 39 just about 25 miles south of Rockford just to the west of Rochelle, IL. That storm cell is headed Northeast.

The storm chasers do a good job of helping get warnings out.
The red dots indicate active streaming from a storm chaser and gray dots indicate the storm chaser's cam is disconnected at the moment.
I watched the Moore, Oklahoma tornado a few years ago using this website.

There are others injured in Fairdale. It will be later that the totals come out, but for now... Only 1 dead.

Flagg Center (just NW of Rochelle) got hit hard as well. The restaurant at the corner of Rt 64 & Rt 251 (Grubsteakers?) is gone! My prayers go out to the victims.

No idea where Flagg center is but it's Fairdale that was leveled.

Sympathy goes out to the killed and injured. Even the survivors have a life changing ordeal. It will get you reading the fine print in your insurance policy. You really don't have any idea of the power of these storms until your close to one.

My Wife has close family in Rochelle and they said it was surreal and it's literally a miracle that more people weren't hurt and killed.

Back in 2004 there was a killer tornado that went through the heart of Utica, Illinois, which is very close to La Salle Speedway. 8 people were killed in a downtown tavern. 4 men 4 women. They supposedly did everything correct. Went to the basement, stayed near the West wall, etc.

There was a fellow that had just left the bar and actually watched the twister destroy the building he had just left. He was quoted 10 years later at the memorial ceremony for the 8 victims "live every day like it's your last and be good to people".

I remember that like it was the day before yesterday and we've been far more aware of these storms ever since.

I believe La Salle Speedway sustained some damage as a result of that storm. As the crow flies the speedway isn't more than a mile from where the 8 people perished.

Just returned from Fairdale. The word "eerie" is the best way to describe what I seen! Very haunting, and gruesome site. I was able to get close enough and talked to a gentleman who lived there who told me it was his aunt that was the second fatality... My heart is heavy to have heard him tell me this, and to hear the story of his own survival... It was amazing what he said!!

Captain I cant even begin to imagine how you are feeling at this moment my friend i praise you for going and checking on the well being of those people and seeing first hand the mass destruction of last nights tornado. Thats something that stays with a person for a very long time after seeing that type of destruction and for the people that went thru it i hope and pray for a quick recovery. Im sure that the gentleman that you spoke with appreciated it that you took the time to just comfort him and listen to him!!

I have a 20 or more relatives in gifford illinois that got hit so hard not long a go.. One lost it all and his dad 7 houses down still all there...You just freak out.. it was a week be for they let you in town and you just freak out when you see it. thank god no one from my family got hurt...
