Not sure why. Possibly some Oakshade local can enlighten us. Talked to Rusty years ago at a Lincoln S N race. Seemed like a OK down to earth guy to me. I will say at that time the guy was really racing on a shoe string budget and was really competitive. Maybe he roughed up one of the local favorites at Oakshade?

I think he has put people off in the past along with his pr people always bringing up the shoestring budget, then right after telling us about lack of funds turns around and drives HUNDREDS of miles out of the way past SEVERAL tracks, then claims its a business thing......I understand the amount of cash it takes to run a SLM but to drive dang near four states away from home and to feed fans on it being a matter of dollars and cents makes zero since, and to clarify I am not a Schlenk hater met him few times and he can dang sure wheel a LM.

Hes a class act and a great driver! He won earlier this year in the 11 car over Matt Miller, Jeep, insane Duane, Westfall, the rice boys, Latham, Gilpen, James to name a few! Always polite and always willing to help fellow drivers!

Highside25 maybe I should clarify more, it is his right to do so never said it wasn't but don't ask for pity when you bypass a race at one of your local tracks that is having a regional special then proceed to drive 3 1/2 states away for a regular show in Highland Il.....he hasn't done so this year but in years past he has, I also personally witnessed a tantrum thrown by him at FALs a few years back at the pit shack over their policy of giving checks instead of cash after the night was over......I was a fan until then, his actions were beyond child like and treating people with that much disrespect was final straw, but once again I respect his driving abilities.

I think Rusty likes to just go to tracks he's not been to just for the change. But then again sometimes I think he might be trying to slip in and cabbage some easy UMP points.

1. He is racing on a tight budget (one car, one motor) 2. He will travel for UMP points, if you are racing for ump points and are the points leader. Why would you race someplace thats not a UMP track. He also dosen't really run his own equipment at Eldora very often. He has but he has blown motors and had bad luck. 3. People boo him at Oakshade because he has won to much. 5 or 6 track titles and before his run in late models he won a lot of sportsman races. Oakshade fans also used to boo Kris Patterson and Shane Yoder for the same reasons. Sick of the same guy winning over and over. 4. I can't think of anyone that helps drivers and especially young drivers as he does. At least not in my area. 5. Their are very few owner/drivers that run as well and accomplish as much he does with the equipment he has. 6. I think anyone that competes has thrown a fit, and that goes for racers also. 7. He races clean every week, and he can wheel the hell out of a car. Two weeks ago he had to borrow a car because his motor was sent out, he won at Attica and ran second at Oakshade. The car he borrowed was no masterpiece. I have talked to him several times at several tracks and on Facebook. You couldn't ask for a better guy, never acts busy or to good to talk.

I have been Rusty's "pr people" for many years with the exception of the 1 year I stepped away as someone else did it and about ruined his credibility in the process. Not one time have I ever said anything about a "shoestring budget" (most drivers operate on one of those). What his fans and other bench racers say is up to them. When you pay his bills you can dictate where and when he races. Until then, sit back and enjoy the show.

it's sorta refreshing that a so called "shoe string" guy can race and be competitive.. there are way to many guys that have more money than they know what to do with and can't make it out of the B-main...

Part of the UMP scoring is the amount of cars in a race. So it benefits you to tow to BFE if there will be more cars, which is more points. I don't see Rusty ducking competition, just trying to get the most points even if it doesn't make financial sense.

That's exactly how he chooses where to race. As stated may not make financial sense but gives him the best chance to maximize his UMP points. I talked to him after he won the UMP points battle a few years ago and he told me he raced 72 times to get his highest 35 finishes that count in the final tally. He knows what works for him.

UMP bases points off of car counts, wether it's Bobby or Joe Blow, he is in the heart of UMP country in Illinois. Rusty is not, you need a car count to maximize points. 20 cars gets you less points than 30 cars. Now go ahead and get the candle out.

I don't care if rusty lives in AZ the point his he would drive by tracks that had more competition to go pick up easier UMP points. So it's hard for a fan to feel bad for his budget when he travels 3 or 4 times the distance than he had to. Which is fine if he wants to do that but I was guessing at why he gets booed

Just an update to an old subject. Rusty still borrowing cars to keep up in UMP points won a feature at Oakshade Saturday in the #27 hahn ride. Basically a Oakshade regular that has not really run up front in a long time put Rusty in the car as a favor to Rusty and he took it to the front. It's the 4th different car schlenk has won in this year. 3 are not his. Congratulations Rusty
