What criteria does a race have to meet to be considered a crown jewel?

#1. pay out a butt load of money !

Their are more stipulations like history and other things but $$ is tops in my book.

Prestige. The Crown Jewel races in general are The Indy 500, Monaco GP and the 24 hrs of Le Mans (and the original Nurburgring that was something like a 19 mile lap). Winning any of those races puts the driver in an elite group of drivers because each has their own unique challenges above and beyond all other racing circuits in the same class of racing.

The Crown Jewels of DLM racing were The Dream, World 100 and the DTWC. My take is they were the prestige races because of the feature distance, the field of the "best of the best" they would draw (before these big WoO and Lucas Series, etc formed that draw every big name every event over and over) and the big prize money.

100 lap features are a huge test of tire management, setup, concentration, lap traffic, changing track surface and strategy skills. So winning a 100 lapper anywhere is a big deal to me.

Like the person said above though, the prestige of the old Crown Jewel races has kind of diminished a lot because these days, the best of the best are on the road year round in touring series and the new "Crown Jewel" titles are probably winning the big touring series championships, rather than just one race.

As I said in the Fairbury thread. You'd really have to ask the drivers themselves what the "Crown Jewels" are. They're the ones that will let you know what jewels are most important in their proverbial crowns.

Yeah, well, the N/S and Show Me fans will get the last word.

ASI and DoD found 10 Crown Jewels this year without much effort.

The Crown Jewel discussion is a candy toss.
