Smoky Mountain Speedway is proud to announce a special night of racing this Saturday, September 19. In addition to the Southern All-Stars King of the Mountain Fall Classic taking place, it will also be Hall of Fame Night at the historic 4/10-mile facility.
Smoky Mountain Speedway has a long history of racing in the East Tennessee area. From the early dirt days to the NASCAR and asphalt era to the modern day racing, Smoky Mountain Speedway will honor that history with a special Hall of Fame Night.
Prior to racing getting started, former Hall of Famers will be on hand to meet and greet fans. Former hall of famers such as H.E. Vineyard, “Little” Bill Corum, Melvin Corum, Skip Arp, and original Atomic Speedway owner Bob Martin are some of the legends that will be available to meet fans from 5:30 until 7:00. There will be a limited number of special cards available for fans to get signed by these legends. There may be another legend or two added to this list before the end of the week.
During the intermission of the racing program, the 2015 class of the Smoky Mountain Speedway will be inducted. Drivers Lamar Winkle, Marion Tipton, and Snooks Defoor,contributors Connie Boring and Larry Jones, and asphalt legend Randy Bethea will be inducted as the newest members of the Smoky Mountain Speedway Hall of Fame.
Lamar Winkle was a force at Atomic Speedway and Smoky Mountain Speedway for many year. Marion Tipton was a fixture in the area who was one of Atomic Speedway’s first champions. Georgia driver Snooks Defoor was as successful in East Tennessee as he was in his home state. Connie Boring helped many racers from her years working at Hoosier Tire South and scorer at Smoky Mountain and Atomic. Larry Jones was a successful engine builder who helped many racers through the years. Randy Bethea was a successful driver during SMS’ NASCAR era as well as being one of the first African-American drivers from this area.
The induction ceremony will take place sometime around 8:30.
Pit gates will open at 3:00. Grandstand gates and tier parking will open at 4:00. Grandstand tickets are just $15 for adults. Children 6-11 are $5 and children 5 and under are free. Tier parking admission is $20 for adults, children 6-11 are $10, and children 5 and under are free. Pit passes are $35 for adults, children 11 and under are $15.
Hot laps and qualifying for the Southern All-Stars, sportsman, and street stocks will start at 6:45 followed by B-main action, the intermission with Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and capped off with feature racing action.
