I am fairly new to imca modifieds. My car has a fairly stout 383 and with a 6.0 final drive. Will this gear work ok for a 3/8 mile track? I am looking to stay around 6500 to 6800 rpms. I have been told a 6.0 final drive is a good overall gear for most tracks. Will this final drive stay within the above rpm range on a 3/8 mile track? Thanks

Tracks can vary greatly even when called a 3/8. I race on a couple of pretty fast 3/8 tracks and usually run a 5.29 or 5.43 and turn 7-7400 rpm. not sure how much help that is but if you post the track you intend to run someone may have better info for you.

Confused?

Depends on the track. Ours is a 3/8 and anywhere from a 5.67 to 6.0 is run. Another 3/8 in south Texas would use a 5.43 to 5.83.

We ran a 5.43 @ Devils Bowl with a well built 383 and AR tires.

Thanks guys. I will be running cotton bowl speedway in Texas. Again, I would like to stay around 6800 rpm. I am assuming 6.0 final dive would put me in 7000 to 7500 range?

Confused?

It will. That's what I had when I ran there. I had a 7600 chip in mine and never hit it. I do know, the really fast cars are not running that low of a gear.

If you want to be around 6500-6800 at cottonbowl, you will need to run a 5:67 or 5:83. Also depends on how much lightweight stuff you have in your motor and your cam selection.
