The 8th annual Appalachian Mountain Speedweek finalizes its 2016 schedule with seven races over a ten day period…
With the new year upon us, the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek is proud to announce that the 2016 edition of the annual mid-atlantic speedweek for super late models will consist of seven races run over a ten day period. Those races will take place from June 3rd through June 12th this summer. The new schedule promises to have something for everyone as it boasts old favorites, as well as driver and fan requested venues that are new for the 2016 tour, including the series first visit to Selinsgrove Speedway since the 2010 season. Selinsgrove will be closing out this year’s speedweek on Sunday, June 12th as well as hosting the awards ceremony, where the top drivers in points will receive their point fund money and championship hardware that same evening. The series will return to speedweek stalwarts Bedford, Port Royal and Hagerstown Speedways again this year where in the past the speedweek races have been nothing short of phenomenal. In addition, the Appalachian Mountain Speedway is proud to announce its first ever 2-Day event scheduled for June 9th and 10th when the series makes its inaugural visit to Hesston Speedway. If that’s not enough, returning this year will be the much anticipated first super late model event held at Path Valley Speedway who lost their inaugural show to rain last year.
• Bedford Speedway will kick-off the series on Friday, June 3rd at the historic Bedford Fairgrounds. The Speedway is celebrating their 80th year of operation in 2016. • Staying with the Fairground tradition the series heads to the beautiful Port Royal Speedway the very next night where the super late models will join the high powered 410 sprint cars for the $4,000 to Win/$400 to start 40 lap Charlie Grinestaff Memorial on Saturday, June 4th. • Sunday, June 5th sees the speedweek series hit the 1/4 bull ring of Path Valley Speedway for a 40 lap event. The first ever visit of the high powered super late models will garner the winner a cool $4,000 with $400 to take the green. Path Valley will also utilize the Monday June 6th date as a rain date in case of inclement weather on the 5th. Check them out at www.pathvalley.com
• After a few days off, the series and its drivers will head to Hesston Speedway for not only their first speedweek race at the facility but it will also be the first 2-day event in speedweek history. The event will see two separate complete programs on Thursday, June 9th and Friday, June 10th. The Thursday portion will be a 30 lap affair paying $3,000 to win with $350 to take the green. On Friday, the cars & stars of the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek will take part in $5,000 to win, 50 lap championship race that will also pay $500 to start. • On Saturday, June 11th the series heads south of the Mason Dixon line to the Capitol of Dirt Track Racing, the Hagerstown Speedway in Hagerstown Maryland. The only speedway to host an event in all 8 years of the speedweek existence will see the drivers battle for an added purse of $5,000 to win over the 40 lap distance. • The series concludes at the new Selinsgrove Speedway on Sunday, June 12th with a 40 lap feature that will pay $4000 to the winner with $400 to start. Under new management, Selinsgrove will also host the awards ceremony following the event. They have an exciting schedule planned for rejuvenated half mile. “So far plans have been going great” said co-promoter Jason Clapper. “Kurt & I have been working real hard to make 2016 the best year yet for the series and things are falling into place. We are working on some pretty exciting things for the series that we will be announce as time gets closer. Also, we will be able to guarantee an expanded point fund regardless of what the weather throws at us this year. We had another series state we should be charging the drivers a registration fee per race but we have never done that and never will. That’s not what Kurt & I and Speedweek are about. We want to give back to the racers and fans in our area and produce the best racing we can without charging drivers to put on the entertainment. Obviously all the rain during last year’s Speedweek put a damper on the series and we are out to more than make up for that” added Clapper.
