TAZEWELL, Tenn. – September 4, 2016 – For several years, David Payne has been awaiting the chance to drive into victory lane at Tazewell Speedway. After race-leader Vic Hill slowed with a flat tire on the 17th lap, Payne’s chances of doing that seemed more realistic. Payne led the remaining distance, only challenged once by Billy Ogle Jr. in the later stages of the 44-lap Buddy Rogers Memorial to capture his first-career Southern Nationals Bonus Series victory.

Payne became the seventh different winner in seven races with his $4,400 payday. Payne drove the Gibson Motorsports and Payne Excavating-sponsored Capital Race Car to the victory. Payne also became the 21st different winner in series history. There have been 28 races contested since 2014 with 21 different winners on the tour.

Payne led the remaining 25 laps for the victory and crossed the line 00.686 seconds ahead of second place finisher Billy Ogle Jr. Rounding out the top-five in the main event were Chad Ogle, Donald McIntosh and Ross White.

Four yellow flags slowed the feature event. The first yellow came on lap two as the field was slowed on the front chute and emergency personnel was called to the grandstand area to attend to a race fan in need. The second yellow flag came on lap 17 as race-leader Vic Hill slowed with a right-rear flat tire. On lap 32, the yellow came out for Phil Helton spinning and coming to a stop on the back stretch. The final yellow came on the 37th lap as Chris Combs slowed on the main straightaway, then entered the pit area.

The next Southern Nationals Bonus Series event will be on Saturday September 17th at Richmond (Ky.) Raceway for the 29th Annual Sunoco Race Fuels Paul “Butterball” Wooldridge Memorial paying $10,059-to-win.
