Eck Wins Fast & Furious UFo “Battle at the Border” at the “Stateline ShooutOut”

(Busti, NY) –Stateline Speedway opened the first night of its “Stateline ShooutOut” mega-event with the “Battle at the Border” for the UFo Super Late Models. After 38 jaw-dropping laps, Doug Eck of Corry, PA put his name in the UFo record books as a first-time winner.

The new track configuration at Sateline lived up to the hype with lightning-fast, multi-groove action all night long. 30 Super Late Models were split into 4 pill draw heat races, with Max Blair, Dave, Hess, Jr, Mike Pegher, Jr. and Greg Oaks winning those races. John Lobb and Dylan Yoder split the consolation wins. The redraw of the top 12 positions put Darrell Bossard and Matt Urban on the front row.

At the drop of the green, Urban charged into the lead with Oakes in hot pursuit. Urban opened a slight lead until lap 5 when the caution appeared for Max Blair. One lap after the restart, another caution appeared for a collision between Rob Blair, John Lobb, Chad Valone and Bump Hedman, with only Hedman continuing. Pegher had already surged from this 11th place starting position into third at this point behind Urban and Oakes.

When the race resumed, an amazing four-car battle for the lead ensued between Urban, Oakes, Pegher and eighth starting Eck. On lap 10, before another caution appeared for track champion Dutch Davies. On the double file restart, the leaders went three wide with Oakes and Pegher moving past Urban. Then one lap later, Pegher took the point of the race.

Another caution appeared on lap 14 for Waylon Wagner and Chris Hackett, sending both drivers to the rear. After the restart, Pegher, Oakes and Eck went three wide numerous times for the lead. With Pegher being scored the leader, Eck moved into second on lap 16. Pegher and Eck separated themselves from Oakes and began to race side-by-side for the lead during the mid-point of the race.

Pegher soon began to show smoke and on lap 25 the caution was thrown as his car emitted excessive smoke. With Pegher going to the pits, Eck now took command. On the lap 25 double file restart as well as the final restart on lap 31, Oakes challenge for the lead on the outside of Eck for a full lap. Each time, Eck was able to beat Oakes off of the fourth turn to keep the lead. Matt Lux moved into third after the lap 25 restart.

Eck crossed under the quadruple checker flags first to claim the $2,500 win. Oakes finished a close second with Lux in third. Hess finished fourth followed by Bossard. Urban recorded a sixth place finish with Hackett charging back from the rear to finish seventh. Pete Alspaugh, John Volpe and Rich Gardner, who won the August UFo event at Stateline, rounded out the top ten.

The “Stateline ShooutOut” continues on Saturday, September 10 with the “Penn-Yorker.” The UFo Super Late Models are scheduled to run in a full racing program with a 55 lap championship paying $5,000 to the winner.
