BULLS GAP, TN – Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, GA drove the Textron Off-Road Sweet Bloomquist with Clements power to his second ULTIMATE win of the 2017 season, and the fourth of his career in the Freedom Isn’t Free 50 on Monday night at Volunteer Speedway. McDowell took the lead from Ross Bailes of Clover, SC on lap 29, and then went on to win the $10,000 top prize.

Two-time 2017 ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series winner Brandon Overton of Evans, GA took the second spot, and Bailes came home in third. Shanon Buckingham of Morristown, TN finished fourth, and fifth went to Fast Qualifier Vic “The Thrill” Hill of Mosheim, TN.

Hill set a new Volunteer Speedway Track Record in M&W Transport “Haulin’ It” Qualifying with a lap in 11.860 seconds. Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN was sixth and Ryan King of Seymour, TN started 15th and finished seventh. Ricky Weiss of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada had the longest tow and took the eighth spot.

The defending and two-time ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series Champion Dennis Franklin of Gaffney, SC drove to a ninth-place finish. Dakotah Knuckles of Ewing, VA rounded out the top ten after starting 20th, and was the Hard Charger of the Race. In other preliminary action, the three eight-lap heat races were won by Bailes, Overton, and McDowell.

When the green flag came out to start the Freedom Isn’t Free 50 on Memorial Day evening, Overton took the lead from his outside front row starting spot followed by polesitter Bailes, and third-starting McDowell. On lap three, McDowell passed Bailes for the 2nd spot. The first of only two caution flags came out for Travis Greer of Marion, VA on lap 16.

During the caution period, G.R. Smith of Statesville, NC hit Hill, and Smith was sent to the pit area for the rest of the evening. Bailes got by McDowell to reclaim the second spot on the double-file restart, and on lap 18, moved up to challenge Overton for the lead. Bailes grabbed the point on lap 19, with Overton second, and McDowell in third.

McDowell was back up on the wheel by lap 20, and he moved back up to the second spot, passing Overton on lap 22. The final caution flag of the race came out on lap 28 for debris on the front straightaway. The restart saw Bailes jump the cushion on lap 29, and McDowell was able drive by to take the lead.

The last 20 laps of the race saw the veteran two-time Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Late Model Series National Champion work lapped traffic like playing a vintage violin and drive unchallenged to the checkered flag with a .777 margin of victory.

The next race for the ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series will be a National event this Saturday night at one of the richest one-day races in the country for Regional dirt late models. Virginia Motor Speedway in Jamaica, VA will host the $20,000-to-win, $575-to-start USA 100. The rain date for this prestigious race will be Sunday night.
