I noticed a bit of play in the steering wheel of a car I wrench on. I never tore into a rack and pinion on one of these cars yet, but if I understand correctly the adjustment is on the top side (big slotted screw/plug). I was going to tighten it up this week, but thought I'd see if there's a proper way, or any damage to look for before I just tighten it til it feels good. I don't want to overlook any potential issues or cause more problems than I'm fixing. Thanks!

If it has more than one season on it, it needs new rack housing bushings. Free play is not adjustable.

Thank you. Not what I was hoping for, but I'm sure it's time for a rebuild. It came in the car and probably has a few seasons on it.
