Tanner English Tenth Different Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Late Model Series Winner at Brownstown Speedway

By Michael Despain

BROWNSTOWN, IN – August 5, 2017 – The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series would make its first-ever visit to Brownstown Speedway in Brownstown, Ind. on Saturday evening with $5,000 to win up for grabs and Tanner English of Benton, Ky. would park his mount in victory at the famed ¼ mile Jackson County Fairgrounds dirt track when the checkered flag would wave on the contest.

The win by English was his first career Iron-Man Late Model Series victory and would mark the tenth different winner in ten series so far in 2017. English’s victory would come aboard the Seay Motors/Bobby Garner Farms/Schaeffer’s Oil/AFCO/Wiles Driveshafts sponsored #96 Rocket Chassis entry.

Tanner English would take the initial race lead in the 40 lap, $5,000 to win event, with Hudson O’Neal, Michael Chilton, Chad Stapleton, and Matt Henderson giving chase, with Henderson winning a three-wide battle on the opening lap for the fifth spot. The caution would fly on lap two when Jeff Neubert and Jeremy Hines would tangle in turn two and the restart would also be null and void as Joey Standridge would slow in turn one, but would return after changing a flat tire. English would again fire off from the lead, while Chilton would challenge O’Neal for second and the pair would enter turn three side-by-side only to spin O’Neal spin his mount and draw a caution flag, with the cars of Jeff Wilson and Jared Bailey also being involved. This restart would see Stapleton go the second position and Henderson and Connor Meade would battle for the fourth spot, trading the position on laps six and seven before Henderson would secure the spot, while seventeenth starting Marty O’Neal and sixteenth starting Jason Jameson would duel for the final spot in the top five as well. Disaster would strike Marty O’Neal on lap eleven when his machine would slow and go over the banking in turn one, with a brief fire coming from the car and would see the yellow flag become a red flag to attend to O’Neal’s car. The next restart would also come back when Carder Miller, Devin Gilpin, Standridge, Steven Godsey, and Levi Ashby would tangle entering turn one in an incident that would see Gilpin’s car land on its roof, resulting in the second red flag period of the race, with Gilpin climbing from the car under his own power and checked out to be all right. This restart would again see English maintain the race lead, while Chilton would grab second from Stapleton and Jameson would nose past Stapleton for third on the same circuit. The final caution of the event would fly on lap twelve when Meade’s machine would slow exiting turn two.

By this point, fourteenth starting John Whitney would reach the top five and would take third from Jameson on lap twelve and two circuits later would sneak past Chilton for the runner-up slot. With English continuing to maintain a comfortable lead out front, Jameson and Chilton would begin to battle for the third spot, with Jameson winning that battle on lap eighteen. As the halfway indicator was given to the field, English continued to maintain his lead over Whitney, but would start the process of working slower traffic on lap twenty-three. As English would pick his way through traffic, Hudson O’Neal had charged his from the rear of the field after his lap two caution and would work past Stapleton for the fifth position on lap thirty-three and scoot past Chilton for the fourth spot one trip later on lap thirty-four. Whitney and Jameson would duel for the second position in the waning laps of the contest and would reel in English a bit in traffic, however, English would prevail and see the checkered flag first, with Whitney keeping Jameson at bay to claim runner-up honors. Hudson O’Neal would finish fourth, while Stapleton would make a last lap pass of Chilton to finish fifth. Chilton would head up the remainder of the top ten finishers, followed by twentieth starting Ashby, Craig Vosbergen, eighteenth starting Adam Bowman, and Shelby Miles.

The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series next events will be Saturday September 2 at Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, Ky. for the Harold Hardgrove Memorial, paying $3,522 to win and Sunday September 3 at Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, Tenn. for the Buddy Rogers Memorial, paying $4,400 to win.
