Rodney Sanders Humbled by Grant Junghans Memorial Win

Happy, Texas (08/22/17) – Rodney Sanders claimed one of the proudest victories of his young career on Friday night. The pilot of the Wichita Tank Racing #20 DriveWFX.com/ Swan Energy/ MB Customs/ Hatfield Racing Engine Modified streaked to the $10,002 win in the 2nd Annual Grant Junghans Memorial.

The $10,002 payday was obviously rewarding, but this win meant much more to Sanders.

“Grant [Junghans] was a heck of a guy, and he left this world far too soon,” Sanders said. “He loved racing probably as much as anybody I’ve ever known, and his bravery as he battled cancer set an example for us all. To win the race held in his memory is something that I’m very proud to have accomplished.”

Rodney Sanders returned to action with the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) on Thursday night for the seventh round of the Hunt for the Casey’s Cup presented by S&S Fishing & Rental at Pepsi Scotland County Speedway (Memphis, Missouri). Moving up two spots in his heat race, Sanders scored a 3rd-place finish, positioning him 10th on the starting grid for the opening night feature. Passing one car in the 40-lap affair, Rodney posted a 9th-place outing.

The following night, traveling to Lakeside Speedway (Lakeside, Kansas), Rodney was one of 76 USMTS competitors on hand for the 2nd Annual Grant Junghans Memorial. Streaking through the field eight spots in his heat, Sanders landed a 2nd-place finish behind Stormy Scott, earning him the 7th-starting position for the A-Main.

Taking control of the lead by lap-18, Rodney held off Jason Hughes late to capture his sixth win of the season and a $10,002 payday. Lucas Schott, Hughes, Stormy Scott, and Travis Saurer rounded out the Top 5 in the 42-lapper.

Rodney rounded out his USMTS weekend with a 20th-place finish at Salina Highbanks Speedway (Pryor Creek, Oklahoma) on Saturday and a 5th-place finish 81 Speedway (Park City, Kansas) on Sunday.
