MARYVILLE, TN (August 26, 2017)—The Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAV-TV made their second-ever appearance to Smoky Mountain Speedway on August 26th as Sam Hafertepe Jr. of Sunnyvale, Texas claimed the $4,000 payday during the Thunder in the Smokies event presented by Food City. Polesitter Wayne Johnson would grab the early lead in the 30-lap main event of the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series with Sam Hafertepe, Jr. in hot pursuit. The first yellow flag would wave on lap two as Michael Miller slammed the turn one wall. By lap ten, the leaders were starting to see lapped traffic and Johnson would have his hands full as Hafertepe would close the gap and take the lead over the veteran Johnson by lap 13. Haftertepe’s pass for the lead came in turn two. While working traffic, Blake Hahn was able to work his way into the second spot moving Johnson back to third. Johnson would bring out the red flag on lap 16 as he flipped in turn two. He was uninjured. Haftertepe would hold off Hahn to capture the $4,000 payday. This marked the second visit by the Oklahoma-based touring group to the 4/10th’s mile race track located in Maryville, Tenn.
